TEri YEARS AGO' Roger DeCoster (Suz) and Kent Howerton (Hus) sewed up class championships at the Livermore, California round of the Trans-AMA. With one round remaining, DeCoster received the 500cc International class title, while Howerton earned the LOp SpOt in the 250cc Support class. The course was powdery and dusty, making DeCoster finish in only sixth spot after a slow start in the first moto; he came back to win moLO two to claim the overall over Suzuki rider Willi Bauer. (4-8). German Adolf Weil (Mai) was third in the500ccdivision with a 16-2 tally. Howerton rode weU, posting two second-place scores for the 250cc overall. Second was Honda's Marty Smith (4-1), while Bultaco rider Ron Pomeroy was third overall with a 3-3. First-molO winner Gaylon Mosier ran third for the opening lapof moto two, but dropped out. Cycle News founder Charles Clayton featured two of Bill Bell's C&J-framed four-stroke Honda motocrossers. Clayton stated, "The two-eycleengine has had its day in motocross and the four-cycle's day is dawning." Terry Kinzer won the AMA Grand National Hillclimb Championship in the Formula A class over Doyle Disbennell; Ohio's Earl Bowlby was third. In the Formula B division, Keith Grooms scored 159 points to James Clark's 151 for the title. Kentucky-based David Mosley received third with 149 points. Tommy Croft swept the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at a Continental Motosport Club (CMC) motocross at Carlsbad Raceway. Billy Urban and Mike Bell finished 2-3 in the 125s, while Randy Myers and Bob ElIioll did the same in the 250cc race. Bruce Sass took four class championships in the final points for the Mountain Roadracing Association (MRA). In the 501-0pen Production class,. Sass won over Art Friedman and Rusty Sharpe. John .Ulrich rode "Killer Deek" (his trusty DKW) LO the I25cc Cafe championship. In AMA District36 indoor short track action in San Jose, California, "Flyin' Fred" Merkel (Hon) won the 80cc Expert class. Brian Thompson (Yam) finished second, ahead of Jim Filice (Yam). Thompson was also second in the 100cc Expert Mini main, this time behind Don Cantaloupi (Yam).
