SCIIA ID1lcHmb CbamldoDShi~ Peterson claims '84 Rillclimb Championship at DeAnza ENCLOSED TRAILER SPECIALISTS OICO OFFERS A MODEL TO SUIT EVERY NEEDI By Cherry Cooper and Debbie Kelly SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. II The Southern California Hillclimb Association and DeAnza Racing Association combined efforts to produce the 1984 10th annual World Championship Hillclimb at DeAnza Cycle Park. A capacity spectator turnout saw two-time DeAnza World Hillclimb Champion Kerry Peterson capture wins in four different classes - all three 500cc classes and the Open Exhibi· tion bout. In the 500cc classes, Peterson's weapons were '84 CR500R Hondas, while a very trick nitroburning 1500cc Harley-Davidson carried him over the top in the Open Exhibition. Prior to the DeAnza championship, Peterson had clinched the SCHA World Championship. Honda-mounted Tom Kelly took top honors in the 250cc Altered Stock title, while Don Orosco - on a Yamaha - captured the 250cc Box Stock title. This event being the last of the 1984 season and the second most prestigious - next to the famed Widowmake.r - had the nation's best hillclimbers competing on two separate hills for a $7500 purse and nine world class titles ranging through the Powder Puff class through the Open Exhibition. Mini class action got underway first with Dunn Voyer pushing his Yamaha to the 340 foot level on the ·tire hill. Dunn held high mark through both rounds of competition despite courageous attempts by Utah's Travis Whitlock at 330 feet and HiPoint, KRW, Number One Racing rider Robie Peterson at329 feet on his Honda. The Powder Puff class was next to attack the hills, and almost everyone was surprised to see most of the girls were mounted on 500s. Provo, V tah's Debbie Whitlock showed the rest of the ladies the right moves by climbing up to the510 foot markclincrung the win. Debbie Miller put in a fine ride by inching her way up to 400 feet claiming second; Kathy Mercurio climbed to third. Defending 250cc Stock class champion, Pat]ohnson, was relieved of his crown to the only 250cc rider to crest the hill - Don Orosco, on his One Stop Cycle Yamaha. Marty Wilson roosted his way up to a second. The 250cc Altered Stock class featured a battle between two Honda riders, Tom Kelly and Perry Schoulten. In his first run, Kelly reached the 475 foot mark which was enough to hold him through the next round to take the class win. I t was his first win of the year. The tire class hill was mostly smooth and groomed all the way to the steep upper section. It turned out to be a pure.horsepower hill, and that factor was very evident in the 500cc classes. Pete.rson took his American Honda, Hi-Point. Tsubaki, KRW, Nippondenso, Too-Tech, RichterPrivateer, Bing, Vni-Filter, Continental, Super Trac, Cancilla, Tom's Cycle, ultra potent CR500 Hondas to the two 500cc tire class victories with a 9.07 time to the top on the Stocker and a 9.04 on the Altered. An aggressive first run of 10.40 gave George Sauer and his Yamaha the secondplace slot in the Stockers. He just squeaked out Ed Ethridge's Honda at 10.52 and Russ McCoy at 10.68, on a Yamaha. Exhibition class climbing began on the very rough virgin hill to the right of the tire class route. This hill had not been run at any previous even t so it turned out to be a real challenge for the two largest and most crowd pleasing classes of the day -' the 500ccand Open Exhibition. The difficulty and chaUenge of the hill was quite obvious as only five 500cc riders, and four Opens, topped the hill. Setting the pace to beat in the first round of the 500cc Exhibition was Peterson at 18.20 overthe top. V tah 's Kenny and Mel Kimball showed the Californians that they're a force to be reckoned with took second- and thirdplace money on Cycle Wise Yamahas. Russ McCoy put his newly-acquired Yamaha to the test and came up with an impressive fourth-place showing. Dave Turner took fifth-place money after a timing clock malfunction on his second ride over the top forced him into a third ride situation that ended at 345 feet. Open Exhibition wrapped up the day's racing with the ultimate dirt throwing, earth-ripping action attacking the hill. Peterson was not to be denied a clean sweep of the event at this point, and he proceeded to blast over the top at a 14.66 pace. Keith Roessler and Mel Kimball manhandled their big Hondas to the second- and thirdplace slots with five riders over the top, and Dave Turner hung. i':l there on the O.K.
