TErt YEARS AGO uzuki rider Rich ThorwaJdson po ted an 8-5 score for top American at the Puyallup, Washington, round of the Trans-AMA. The winner was Puch factory rider Harry Everts, who went 1-2; Roger DeCoster (Suz) was second overall with a 5-1. The highest finishing American in a moto was Husky's Mike Hartwig, who got second in the first round; moto two saw him finish 14th for fifth overall. Complicatingtheevent was day-long rain and a mud-soaked track which made riding nearly impossible for some; DeCoster and Brad Lackey were among the many who crashed, bog· ged. or got swamped in the mud. Kenny Zahrt (Bul) won the 250cc Support class over Jim Turner, with a 3-1 finish. At A cot Raceway's annual long· track speedway event, BiUyGray (Jaw) emerged as the winner in the Handicap main. Gray won his semi, beating our Jim Fishback, DeWayne Keeter and Scott Sividge. Winner of the night's first semi was Sonny Nutter. Gray was noted for his aggressive riding style on the long track, which put him far ahead of everybody else. Fini hing second behind Gray in the main, and winner of the Scratch consolation event, was Bruce Penhall. David Taylor made a clean sweep of the l25cc Pros at Irwindale Raceway with a 1-1-1 score. Second overall was Mark Tyer, who rode consistemly with a 3-3-2 placing. Mike Bell placed second in the first two motos, but a sixth in the third knocked him back to third for the night. Bell shook of[ his third at Irwindale to come back and win the 125cc Pros at Saddleback Park two days later. Ron Turner was the star early in the first moLO, then gave the lead LO Bell, but Turner got back on the gas LO win moto one. MoLO two saw Turner develop bike troubles and retire from action. Bell inherited the lead and the overall win, after dicing it out with Rick Sheren. Third overall was Bob Marino. Tom Brooks was the winner of the SoCal M.C.'s Virgin Run, after following Bob Balentine on the first loop, then passing for the lead on the second. This made it his third desert victory in a row. Third behind Balen· tine was A.C. Bakken. John Ulrich, teamed with Art Fried· man, racked up an impressive win at Ontario Motor Speedway on Suzuki's new RE-S rotary by winning the AFM-sanctioned baJloon-bustingcontest held along with the regularly scheduled race. In achieving victory, the Ulrich/Friedman team dumped the Suzuki three times; some things never change. Overall Pit Squid Champion was John "Duckboy" Stein, AOW editor of Motorcycling magazine. Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey traded wins in the 125cc Expert class at Corona Raceway. Lawson won the ~!.mile; Rainey the TT.
