If at first the rider isn't satisfied with the White Power shock, White Bros. will dial in the shock again free of charge up to 60 days, even if the spring has to be replaced a couple of times. Up front, White Bros. mounted an ATK fork kit, which, like the rear shock, was set up according to the rider's weight and riding ability. They also installed TMV fork swipers. We ended up with a superbly-suspended big-bore Honda. The improvement both front and rear was dramatic, and it now easily outhandles a stock '85 CR500 over the bumps and in the turns. The only su pension problem we encountered was that the rear shock started to sag a bi t after a few hours on the bike; however, it didn't seem to affect performance. The front end twitched a lillIe bit when braking after a long, fast straight, but it was much better than stock in that situation. Neither the front or back end bottomed hard over larg-e jumps. White Bros. also supplied us with a front disc brake and caliper guard. The guard is made out of very thick plastic, and wedo know of two situations where the guard saved the disc from damage without losing its shape or falling off.. In a crash, we managed to bend the stock handlebars (which isn't very hard to do), and we replaced them with Answer Products Mark Barnettbend handlebars. After CUlling down each side of the bars by one inch, they felt very similar to the stock bend. Theonly real problem with the '84 CR that we didn't get fixed was the kickstaner. It is too short, doesn't travel enough to properly turn-over the engine, and the footpegjams into the rider's upper fool. An '85 CR500 kicks tarter might be the hot elUp; it is slightly longer. We feel thatifyou plan on holding on to your '84 CR500 for another year, these modifications will keep your air-cooled Honda very competitive for at least one more season of racing. It'll take a healthy sum of money for a new shock, fork kit, carb, head work and possibly a new pipe, but it sure is a heck of a lot less than spending about $2500 for a new machine. • CHRISTMAS SALE EXTRAVAGANZA Oh what fun it is to ride!
