While he was disgruntled with his ride, Crevier obtained s\lfficient points to take the year's championship over Kingston. It was touch and go in 600cc Cafe for Alan Inglis. He had to finish to get the championship and his eighth place was almost not enough. Lee Cochran arrived on the scene to take pan in his first Westbound Championship race of the season. He really was the spoiler for Crevier's attempts ata second championship. Cochran's bike just wasn't working right in the first heat. He had the lead for three quaners of the race but Crevier got past him before the flag. Between heats, Cochran's Yamaha received some serious adjustments from Dave Harrold of Motorcycle Works. "Dave saved the day with his tuning," said a very happy Cochr.m after the second heat. His lead was dramatic and complete from first to last lap. Crevier took second but this was not enough to displace Inglis from the championship when all the points were added up. The wildest battle of the day was in 750cc Production. Steve Dick had an excellent chance for the championship if he could finish in the top five. The real fight was for third place for the year. Either Ken Stobban or Daryl Cornwell had the spot if they could finish ahead of the other. Despite the track conditions these riders gave the thousand or so hard-core spectators a good value for their money. The first heat staned with Cornwell in the lead followed by Slobban and Dick. Midway, the lead changed when Stobban got past and refused to be passed. It was desperation city in the last heat with a constantly-changing lead between these two. When they crossed the finish it was Cornwell by the smallest of margins. Dick was quietly in third and secure in his championship. Dick took the lead from the stan in Formula I for both heats. Even that strong a domination was not enough to displace Robert Holden from the Championship. While Dick was catching up in points at Westwood, Holden and panner Neil Chi vas had taken their Suzuki GSX750 to third place at the Castrol 6-Hour Production' Race at Oran Park Raceway, Sydney, Australia on the same' day. It is notoCten that a racer can win a Championship and place in tWO-5eparate races, half a world apan. Results 600 PROD: 1. Randy Kingston (Yom); 2. Steve Crevier (VarnI; 3. Of[ the line the early leaders were I25cc E~pen James Tuckerand Open Expert Tom Moen, who had a fast, unknown line to the first check. Coming straight down the arrows in third overall was Yamaha 250cc Expen Todd Kennedy. At the end of the first 30-miJe loop, Moen came flying in with a good lead only to be flagged down and disqualified for jumping the railroad tracks. "I wasn't aware that this was illegal - I won't miss anymore riders' meetings," Moen said. This left Kennedy with the overall lead after he had passed Tucker midway through the first lap. Tucker, leading the 125cc class in second cwerall was followed by Husky 250cc rider Austen Haydis. Assuming the Open class lead and in fourth overall was Yamaha rider Steve Basin. In a tight baule for fifth overall were 125cc Expert riders John Bird and Ron DesRosiers. Rounding out the top 10 were Open rider Barkin' Tim Markin and Jim ButLS and 250cc riders Matt Hope and Amateur Scon Smith. The white flag found Kennedy stretching his lead and Tucker taking his 125 Honda to the limit. Haydis was still in third overall. The fight for second 125cc carried Bird and DesRosiers past Open rider Steve Basin into fourth and fifth overall. DesRosiers had the edge on the final loop with a quicker pit. Markin was a distant seventh overall with BryaJ;t Han, in his first race as an Expert, moving upquickly. Butts maintained his third Open position at ninth overall. As the checkered flag dropped, pit crews cheered Todd Kennedy to his fifth overall win of the season. James Tucker won the I25cc class with his second overall finish. Kell wins on new UPS Corona track Next Day5ervice By Greg Barbacovi CORONA, CA, OCT. 14 Master Card, Visa American Express Corona Raceway can now boast of a completely new motocross track at their facility, thanks largely to the efforts of the California Racing Club. A rubber-band starting gate opens the door for riders to scramble up a trick two-tie:r uphill. The remaining 1.3-mile track features two sets of double jumps, a wicked off-camber downhill turn, and a smooth straightaway that runs along the top of a mountain ridge. This new layout, which borders the opposite side of the pits, give Sunday MX racers a track that will not conflict with Corona's Sunday evening auto racing program. Mike Kell took the fastest practice lap, and shaved a full second orr of that mark during his first 125cc Pro molO, making the unofficial track record 1:13.7.
