Promoter Johnny Gibson, who founded the Irwindale Raceway, brought speedway back to Bakersfield with a six-week series. A number of top riders from both northern and southern Cal ifornia met on the opening night, but Ferrell was definitely the class of the field. Ferrell started all the way back on the forth in the Handicap main along with Flyin Mike Faria. Robert Kid Curry moved into the lead on the start over Andy Northrup and Rodney Sullivan. Ferrell quickly weaved his way through the pack and passed Northrup for the second spot at the end of the first circuit. He then dove under Curry in tum one on the next lap for the lead. Faria came through the pack and got Northrup for third on the second lap and then took second from Curry on lap three. All that stood between Faria and ·Ferrell was open space. Unfortunately there was too much for Faria to make up in the remaining two circuits, and he settled for a distant second behind Ferrell with Curry hanging on for third. Northrup drew the pole and imme-· diately sped away from the pack at the start of the wild Scratch main. Coming off four 00 lap one, Northrup, Ferrell and Ed Castro all hit the same hole and did whee1ies, but they all managed to save it. From that point on Ferrell and Castro got into a fierce battle for second. They traded it back and forth until Ferrell took it for good on lap three. It appreared that Northrup had it in the bagas he had a huge lead, but he tired over the final circuit and Ferrell got thedriveoulof the last corner and took the win by inches. Curry, who started the evening as a Scratch reserve, took third with Castrol getting the wrap up. Rich Sweaney (Jaw) passed young Jason Chism when the latter went wide out of the final bend to capture the second Division main. Doug Bowers (Jaw) emerged triumphant over the Third Division field when leader Randy Skinner fell in tum one on the final lap. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dubb Ferrell (Jew); 2. Mike Flria (W-); 3.
