CMe/Pioneer Eleotronles Trans-Cal Series: Roua.6 Amateur Trans-Cal final at Indian Dunes By Kit Palmer , VALENCIA, CA, ocr. 27 The sixth and final round of Continental Motosport Club's/Pioneer Electronics Trans-Cal Series took place on the International track at Indian Dunes today, with double points awarded to all riders. Honda rider Scott Yenzer rode conservatively anddinched the 14 500cc Interm~diate class championship, while another Honda rider, Gary Wilson, managed tohold on to second in the series. However, Eric Marnoch and his Honda completely dominated both moLOS: He led from start to finish each time out, winning easily. Marnoch had an excellent chance to win the class championship but mechanical problems with his bike forced him to miss one of the series' races, which cost him valuable points. Marnoch finished sixth in the points race. In the fi rst500cc Intermedia te mota, Marnoch captured the holeshot and never looked back. He stretched his lead with every tum while Duane Quale (Han), Dave Wool more (PMT), Wilson and Ron Lawson (Han) fought over second. Yenzer gated poorly and was in second-ta-last place. Honda rider Gregg Blechman eventually worked his way into the second spot just ahead of Quale and Lawson. At the finish, it was Marnoch way out in front, ahead of Blechman, Quale, Lawson and Darin Lundquist (Han). Outofthe I3-rider class, Yenzer worked his way up to seventh. The second mota was again all Marnoch's. He easily led the entire race while a fierce battle shaped up over second and ·third. W001 more managed 10 break away from the rest of the pack, but four riders were still battling over third. Lawson held on to the third spot while heavily pursued by Lundquist, Blechman, Quale and Yenzer. Yenzer made the first move and passed Quale, then positions remained the same until the last few laps. Blechman and Yenzer moved imo the fourth and fifth spot, right behind Lawson. Then Blechman passed Lawson just before the white flag. During the last lap, the rear wheel bearings on Lawson's Honda disintegrated causing the chain 10 derail. So, at tlie finish, Marnoch took the win ahead of Wool more, Blechman, Yenzer and Baker. Lawson recovered 10 finish 10th and third in the series. After two qualifying motos in the I25cc Intermediate class, the tWO-malO main was set. At the start of the £:irst mota, Honda rider Shaun Kalas stole the holeshot while Bobby Moore, Eddie Hicks, Jeff Capt and' Jeff "Chicken" Matiasevich pursued. During the second lap, Hicks and his Yamaha passed Moore; shortly after, Moore's Kawasaki threw a chain putting him out of tOP contention. Once into second, Hicks started to reel in Kalas. and shortly after. Hicks was glued to Kalas' rear fender. However. during tbe fifth lap, Hicks lowsided. He quickly picked up his bike but dropped itagain, letting Matiasevich, William Surratt, Jim SpollS, Capt and Tommy Collier by. Hicks' crdsh gave Kalas a huge lead, while Hicks began working through traffic. He managed to work up to fourth with two laps remaining and that was it. Kalas took the win followed by Surratt, Matiasevich and Hicks. Spotts took fifth. Kalas again took the win in the second outing, while Hicks took second. However, Hicks' 4-2 score, which gave him second overall, was enough 10 capture the 125cc Imermediate class championship. Matia-sevich finished nimh in the second mota, which gave him third overall and second in the series. Third in the series went to Kalas, while Surratt received fourth. Not only did Surratt take fourth in the I25cc class, he also won the 250cc class championship. Surratt went I-I today to clinch the title. In the first 250cc Intermediate mota, Yamaha-mounted John Posca took the early lead ahead of another Yamaha rider Mike Black, Suzuki-mounted Jeff Sea-gale and Brady Helm. Surratt had a so-so start but made his way up through the pack quickly. Up front, Rieman put heavy pressure on the leader Posca. The dogfight lasted for six laps before Rieman slipped past. With two laps to go. Surratt put the move on Posca and passed him. During the last lap, Surratt hounded Rieman and was trying to pass the Yamaha rider in every turn. With only a few turns left in the race, the leader had problems getting around a hoard of lapped riders, but Surratt used the lapped riders to his advantage by passing Rieman through the last turn before the checkered
