ELKHART LAKE, \VI, OCT. 13 orth Ridge Racing, consisting of the father and on riding combinatIon of Ralph Johnston Sr. an~ J r. along with Doug Cross and Don Sielschott, won the fog delayed endurance round at Road America. North Ridge, riding their Yamaha F] II 00 beat out a top field of endurance teams which incl uded current series point leader QuesterlSullivan and defending champi'on Team Hammer. Utilizing the ingredients of fast riding, fast and few pi t stops and just a pinch of lu k, North Ridge managed to win their second endurance round out of the last three tries. Finishing second after being hampered by high fuel consumption and losing third gear on their Suzuki wa QuesterlSullivan. Z-P Racing put in a fine showing for third on another Yamaha FJIlOO. The race, which was originally to be a six hour test, was reduced to a three hour run due to dense fog. The ten ion caused by the long delay was obvious in the riders meeting held before the fog lifted as race officials grappled with the problem. The decision was made to allow the team captains to go on the track to check conditions. While they were out, a slight breeze came through bringing clearer weather. After a four hour delay the race was finally tarted at 3 p.m. Once underway, the Suzuki-powered maclline of Team Hammer with Russ Paulk at the controls began to quickly pull away from the rest of the field. With only [our laps completed, Paulk opened up a 40-second margin over the second-place ballie between QuesterlSullivan's Mike Harlow and North Ridge Racing's Ralph Johnston Jr. Hammer might have been able to pull out an even larger lead if they had been riding their normal short distance endurance machine, but with that bike sidelined, Hammer was forced to use their 24-hour machine complete with a full complement of high-powered lights. It appeared everything was going on schedule. "We should make our first pit stop at the one hour, five minULe mark," aid Team Hammer's John Ulrich. Just before the one hour mark, the Hammer pit board went up to teU Paulk to come in on the next lap, but instead of Paulk zooming down Road America's long straight he came sputtering into the pits early. The problem was a faulty rotor magnet. It cost Hammer 14 minutes repair time in the pits, and that cost them the race. While Team Hammer's crew worked frantically to get their bike back on the track, QuesterlSullivan's Suzuki·llDO inherited the lead for a short time. Quester was pitting prematurely also. "The bike's fuel consumption is much too high at this poiilt, I hope we will be able to compensate for the problem," said team captain Mike Harlow. North Ridge, with Ralph Sr. at the controls, took over the lead shortly .a..fll"J. ~l\e. ~r JtPN. \"il,.l"\ ii. '!rp' .•e entry in second. The Drury-Canale Team, on a Yamaha TZ750, worked their way into second, and at one point held the lead during the second hour. Meanwhile the Brooklyn, New York-based Z·P Racing Team, on yet another FJI.IOO, had quietly worked themselves up to third. Team Fun was definitely not having much fun as rider Brian Berney went down hard while running near the front of the pack. "I was sliding the bike through th dampnes under the turn 12 bridge all race long then all of a sudden bam! I was down," said Berney after the accident in which he was not injured seriou Iy. Hammer's crew did a good job in getting their Suzuki back out as fast as possible. Unfortunately, the time spent in repairing the bike dropped Hammer back to last position. By the end of the race, Hammer had worked back. up to II th overall and third in the'Prototype class. The race for first came down to a question of could QuesterlSullivan make up for their gas· hungry Suzuki's need for frequent pitting and catch North Ridge? They made things very interesting. With just 30 minutes left in the race, the Quester pi t board was reading minus 25 seconds on the leader. Seven minutes later Quester had dropped to 34 seconds behind North Ridge due to a loss of third gear for Quester. North Ridge finished the three hour run wirh a 50second margin on Quester with both completing 65 laps on the four-mile track. Z-P Racing took third with 64 laps completed. The race couldn't have gone any longer as dense fog settled in right at six o'clock and 20 minutes later it was completely dark. orth Ridge celebrated in winner's circle by flashlight. Team captain Ralph Johnston Sr. said of the day's-events, "We just feel really fortunate to be here. After the wa y things started ou t, we didn't even know if there was going to be a race. We feel we're on a roll now and hope to continue our success in Atlanta next month." Other winners in their respective classes were Fast Company, Bill the Cat Racing, Speedboys, Team Buzzard, Team Maryland and DuryCanale. The Sunday sprints were cancelled due to dense fog. • Results OVERALL: 1. North Ridge Racing (Vam); 2. Quester/Sullivan (Suz); 3. Z-P Racing (Yam); 4. DurvCanale (Yam); 5. Team Wanker (Kaw); 6.
