Pizzitola brought his Tom Cook/ MTC/ BM/VHR/Falicon/Union Cycle/Kosman/Klaus Speed Shop Kawasaki to the line to face the Kawasaki of ovak in the final. Novak wasn't about to let the day end with· out a good fight even though his time were a good three·tenths of a second off what Pizzitola had been running. o\'ak cut the light just right on the tart, but it wasn't enough and his .37/154.37 was a loser to Pizzi· tola's 8.674/145.39. "Superbike Mike" Keyte fa ired bet· tel' than most of the new national champions - he made it to the final on hi year·old uzuki. The bike didn't have the guts it needed in its first pro outing, but Keyte has turned it into a top contender. By the end of Saturday's qualifying, Terry Vance had the 30 bike field covered with an 8.387 best time on his VHR Kawasaki. Dave Schultz was second at 8.522. The .14 second dif· ference is a big one in Pro Stock, but even more interesting was that Schultz, the 1984 IDBA Mechanic of the Year, was not on his two·stroke Kawasaki, but on a new CPz. Sunday brought two more entrants and raised the field to 32 bikes. By round two, 14 of the top 16 in quali· fying had waded through. On"ly Earl Timmons, who broke on his run, and Russ Iyberg, who made a valiant e[fort while finding out that three cylinders aren't quite enough, were knocked out. The first pas of round two saw Schultzagain tRandy Mason. Schultz spun the rear tire on the start and that was all Ma on needed. Barry Kogut faced Mike Chriswell in the next run. Kogut got the bite he needed on the start and ended Chriswell'sday. Randy Anderson, riding Schultz' "old" two· stroke came up to meet Paul Cast. but the meeting didn't last long as Ander on put away Gasl. Keyte downed Cary Tonglet before Vance met Charlie Cressman. The Suzuki Cressman was riding used to be Vance's title·winning mount. It bad been sold and Cary Watters was the rider until he fell out of a tree and broke his hand. Vance quickly made Cressman a spectator. Chris Hoev· enaar had an easy run wheFl John Sachs Jr. red·lighted on the start of tbeir run. Mike Sauro and Bob Car· penter al 0 advanced. Rounds three and four saw Vance put away Hoevenaar and Sauro. In the proce S. Van e set a new elapsed time record of 8.35 seconds. Keyte worked his way to the unal by down· ing Anderson and Kogut. Vance and Keyte staged with Vance blasting out of the bole and posting an 8.396/158.59 pass to Keyte' .685/ 154. I O. Keyte may have lost the run, but taking the championship home was consolation enought. Pro Ca is a new addition to the professional ranks in IDBA this year. It's a 9.20 second bracket class and you basically "run what ya brung." Tom Digan was leading the point . chase going into the Gulfport round. When Buddy McBride put Digan out in the semis and Dave Cook took his Motorcycles Unlimited Kawasaki to the final past David Giles, it gave 'Cook enough points LO win the tiLie. Cook lost to Kawasaki rider McBride in the final. McBride turned in a 9.25/142.85 winning run. The Comp Eliminator win, na· tional title as well as the Sportsman Rider of the Year award went to Allen Mueller. Mueller was aboard a Leo Coff· ponsored Norton. FloydHuntz took home the title in Super Eliminator wbile Ronnie Pay· ton wa the title winner in Combo Eliminator. _ Miles 48,000 3,000 Laps -- ,......; ~ l-, v ..0 o .... u o Riders That's how far California Superbike School students have ridden since the school began using BEL-RAY lubricants two years ago in their Gpz 550 Kawasakis.
