(Above) O'Mara couldn't pass Erik Kehoe during the second moto and took second overall. (Below) Open-cia.. winner Danny Chandler. Bader Manneh snapped the adjustable rear shock strut on his '85 production KX260 Kawasaki early in both motos while in contention for the lead . taking the win ahead of Manley, O'Mara, Wright, Wageman and Hicks. After installing a new strut, Manneh came back LO Steal the second mota holeshot ahead of Eaton, Manley and O'Mara. During the first lap, EaLOn zapped Manneh for the lead, but Manneh stayed close. A slight distance behind followed O'Mara and Manley. During the founh lap, the strut on Manneh's Kawasaki again snapped in half at exacl1y the same pan of the track as it had in the firsrmoto. After passing Manley, O'Mara took control of second and reeled-in Eaton. However, O'Mara couldn't find an opening LO pass EaLOn. The two bauled within a bikelength for the rest of the mota, but EaLOn managed LO keep the O'Show in second. On the last lap, O'Mara staned to slow, knowing that a second-mota win wouldn't give him the overall. After riding the previous night at the OaklandSupercross and two classes today, O'Maracalled itquits and backed off, giving Eaton the win. Manley took third ahead of Wright, Hicks and Gordon Ward. 600cc Pro Yamaha-rider Jim Ellis led the 500cc pack around the first turn in the first mota ahead of Hondamounted Phil Larson, Yamaha pilot Bret Cahors and Chandler. Honda rider Mike Larson crashed in the first turn and recovered in last. However, Mike passed 16 riders in the first lap. Ellis held on to his lead for three laps before being passed by Chandler over the drop-off jump. From that point on, the mota was all Chandler's. Ellis held on LO second, heavily pressured by Phil Larson. But on the gas was Honda rider Mike Fisher. Fisher passed Phil Larson and Ellis by lap ~ix. Eight seconds separated ChandJer and Fisher with five laps remaining. Chandler easily held on LO take the win ahead of Fisher, Phil Larson, Honda rider Willy Simons and Ellis. Phil Larson took the early advantage at the stan of maLO two, while Ellis, Fisher and Chandler pursued. After only a few turns, Fisher had passed Ellis and staned to reel-in Larson. By the stan of the second lap, Fisher had taken control of the lead with Chandler about five seconds behind in second. Larson started to slow with a rear flat giving Ellis third and Husqvarna rider Billy Grossi fourth. During the third lap, Grossi crashed while exiting a turn, and he pulled out of the race. Yamaha-mounted Allen Berluti seuled into fourth ahead of Simons. Fisher's lead remained the same over Chandler for the next four laps before the chain on his Honda derailed, pUlling him back LO eighth. Chandler inherited a comfortable lead ahead of Ellis:Simons, Mike Larson, Berluti and Cahors. Soon after, Ellis began slowing because of a £lal'front tire. This gave Simosn second before he, too, suffered a flat tire. Larson began making up time on Simons and took over the second spot with four laps remaining. Then Simons started feeling Fisher closing rapidly. With two laps LO go, Fisher passed Simons for third. Chandler took the win 20 seconds ahead of Larson, then Fisher, Simons, Tony Wanket, John Reinholt and Ellis. "I felt I could've caught Fisher if he hadn't thrown a chain," said Chandler. "I just made too many mistakes at the beginning of the mota. One time I went off the track and ran in to the bushes; it took me a long time LO regain my composure after that, but I would've gotten him anyway." • Results BOcc EX: 1.
