At this point, a tight battle for fourth brewed between Surratt, Davis and Pascarella. Davis found a way around Surrau, who began feeling Pascarella close behind. However, just after receiving the white flag, Pascarella crashed, dropping to sixth. Thomson took the win ahead of Hicks, Kalos and Davis. At one point, O'Mara pulled up alongside of Kehoe during a long uphill, but Kehoe slammed the door shut and held O'Mara to second. Meanwhile, Healey had moved into third with Honda rider Larry Brooks pressuring. This ballle, like the one fOT the lead, was fierce. But Brooks eventually found a hole in Healey's defense and took third, four laps from the finish. Up front, the dogfight for the lead was still in high gear. With one lap to go, Kehoe gained about a bike1ength over O'Mara which was just enough to hold the win for Kehoe. Kehoe crossed the finish line with his arm held high, while O'Mara gave Kehoe the thumbs-up sign. Brooks finished third ahead of Warren, Healey and Frank. CNC/Ploneer Eleetronies Trans-Cal Series: Round 5 . Kehoe, Eaton, Chandler-on top at Sand Rill By Kit Palmer BRENTWOOD, CA, OCT. 21 For the fourth week in a row, Honda riders swept all three Pro classes in the Continental Motosport CIu h' s/Pioneer Electronics TransCal Series; this week at San Hill Ranch, two of of those classes were won by privateers - Erik Kehoe in the 125s and Eric Eaton in the 250s. Factory Honda rider Danny "Magoo" Chandler, riding a production 'S5 water-cooled CR500, topped the 500cc class. Honda's Johnny O'Mara, the dominate rider in the 125cc and 250cc classes throughout the Trans-Cal Series, was upset by Kehoe and Eaton after three very close baules in both I25cc motos and the second 250cc moto. Lowell Thomson Jr., riding a Yamaha, put an end to Yamaha's Eddie Hicks' win streak in the SOcc Expert class by using a 2-1 score to beat Hicks' 1-2 tally. IOce Expert 8 Kawasaki-mounted Shaun Wooten stole the holeshot at the start of the first SOcc Expert moto with Kawasaki rider Steve Lamson, Yamaha pilot Mike Pascarella, Honda riders William Surrau and Ty Davis, and Hicks hot on his tail. After a few turns Surratt had taken over the· lead, but Hicks worked his way up through the pack and passed both Wooten and Surratt in one move at the top of a long uphill. After one lap, the top positions were Hicks, Surratt, Wooten, Honda's Shaun Kalos and Davis. During the second lap, Thomson made his move and started working his way up fro-JIl. a poor start. l:J:e managed to pass both Davis and Kalos, and then he set after secondplace Surrau. Hicks extended his lead with each lap and held a comfortable advantage over Surratt, who began feeling the pressure from Thomson by the third go-'round. A lap later, Thomson slipped past Surrau while Davis closely pursued. With three laps remaining, Davis started to slow and eventually pulled off to the side of the track with engine problems. This gave the fourth position to Kalos. On the final lap, Kalos hounded Surrau for third, but in the end it was Hicks, Thomson, Surratt, Kalos and Pascarella. Wooten again jumped out to an early lead at th.e start of the second moto, but was quickly passed by Hicks. By the end of the first lap, . Wooten dropped back to fifth behind Hicks, Davis, Thomson and Surratt. Entering lap two, Hicks' lead was seven seconds over Davis. However, Davis crashed handing Thomson second and Surrauthird. Davis remoun ted in sixth but quickly repassed Wooten and set after Kalos. Meanwhile, Hicks enjoyed a comfortable lead, but with two laps remaining, Thomson came around in the lead about five seconds ahead of Hicks. Hicks, riding for the first time on an 'S5 production YZSO, said, "The front wheel shattered. The spokes started breaking about the fourth lap, .so I started to slow so I 125ec Pro Suzuki R&D rider and former mini· cycle competitor Mike Healey captured the holeshot at the start of the first l25cc Pro race, while Kawasaki rider Paul Denis, Yamaha pilot Dennis Daft, Kehoe and O'Mara followed. Healey's lead grew to about five seconds by the second lap, while Kehoe worked his way into second ahead of Daft, Dennis, O'Mara and Chad Parker, on a Kawasaki. By the third lap, O'Mara had control of third but a few seconds behind Kehoe, who began closing the gap on Healey~ For the next three laps, Healey's lead dwindled as Kehoe closed in. During the fifth lap, Kehoe made his move and slipped past Healey. Once in second, Healey had to contend with O'Mara for the next couple of laps before the Honda rider roosted by. The remainder of the race was a showdown between Kehoe and O'Mara. O'Mara tried to sneak past Kehoe in every turn, but Kehoe didn't give in. This went on for five laps before Kehoe slammed into a berm and rebounded off the track a few feet. This gave O'Mara all he needed to take the lead. Kehoe recovered but O'Mara was gone. A ways back in third, Healey dropped his Suzuki in a turn but managed to continue before Parker, Billy Frank and Eddie Warren could pass. In the end it was O'Mara, Kehoe, Healey, Parker, Warren and Frank. The second-moto holeshot went to Daft, followed by Dennis, Kehoe and Healey. However, Kehoe had the lead two laps later, then O'Mara' passed Healey. It took O'Mara three laps to pass Dennis and Daft, while Kehoe developed a sizeable lead. The scene was set - O'Mara had to reel-in and pass Kehoe to enable him to take the overall. Lap after lap, O'Mara slowly gained on Kehoe, and with half the race remaining O'Mara became glued to Kehoe's rear fender. Like the first moto, Kehoe held his own, keeping O'Mara at bay. O'Mara tried every tric~ in the book to get by - screaming, dogging and more screaming, but it didn't faze Kehoe. 250cc Pro The first 250cc moto got off to a rocky start when only hal£of the starting gate dropped which caused for a flag restart. Suzuki rider Rich Mythen grabbed the holeshot but was passed' by Honda-mounted Biran Manley two turns later. Mythen dropped back .a few positions giving Bader Manneh, riding an 'S5 production KX250 Kawasaki, second and Eaton third. O'Mara gated poorly back in 15th.By the third lap, Eaton nipped Mannch for third, while a few seconds behind Manneh followed Yamaha-mounted Russ Wageman, Mythen and Yamaha rider Don Goeuling. The top three riders started to pull away from the rest of the pack engaged in a duel for the lead. By the fifth lap, Eaton slipped past Manley for the lead, then Manneh also passed Manley and began threatening Eaton for the lead. However, Manneh's charge came to a sudden halt when the new adj ustable rear shock strut broke in half, collapsing the rear suspension. "I came off a couple of jumps just past the finish line," said Manneh. "I thought the rear wheel fell off or something." This gave Eaton firm control of the lead and Manley a comfortable second. O'Mara worked his way through the pack and took over third after pass- . ing Wageman, who was bauling with Honda rider Joe Wright. O'Mara realized there was too much distance between himself and Manley with too little time left, so O'Mara cooled it a bit and settled into third. Near the end of the race, Wright put the move on and passed Wageman for fourth. After Wageman, Jeff Hicks followed closely. At the finish it was Eaton easily
