Palenske tops Training lWheels D-37 Enduro u o By Larry Langley RED MTN, CA, OCT. 7 Only two riders zeroed the threeloop Training Wheels M.C. AMA D-37 enduro and Hondamounted Grant Palenske had (Above) Willy Sarzi (715) in the 450/600Cc Mod Production race. Roadrace guru Keith Code (9x) is behind Marcus Falley (6~5) at Willow Springs. (Below) Harry Keast won the Trailing Wheels Senior A class. McKenna's gold at Moto-One MX By The James Gang REDDING, CA, OCT. 14 The first round of the NorCal Fall Super Series featured Eric McKenna, recently retured from the GP circuit in Europe, with -' 30 an easy day in the first round of the series. McKenna's smooth style and his big bore Hi-Point Honda soon proved lO be to much for a combined Pro Class. First-lap action in the first malO found McKenna, Dexter Hayhurst (Yam), Ron LaPointe (Han) and Tim Mulvey (Suz) all wheel to wheel heading down the front chute. Out of the second turn, heading for the big tabletop jump it was McKenna pulling a slight lead, which he started lO build on. Hayhurst, running in second, had his hopes end on the first lap. He unloaded hard on the doubles and his gas tank landed 10 feet down the track. McKenna's lead was 17 seconds at the malO'S end. LaPointe·and Mulvey finished 2-3. Rob James, after a slow starl. caught Stu Perry lO take fourth. MalO two was a rerun of the first mota. McKenna ran away and hid, HayhurstJerurned and crashed out again to end any chance of points. Intermediate action was hot in the 250s with Lance Lollar (Han) and Ron Milligan (Han) battling in both motos. The win went to Lollar, second lO Milligan and third spot went to Ron Naylor (Suz). A great Mini turnout saw an outstanding ride by 10-year-old Ryan Huffman from Roseburg, Oregon. Riding in two Junior classes (8Occ & 6Occ) for back to back matos, Ryan had an almost perfect day: Three wire-to-wire wins and a second. Results eo BEG: 1. Travis Corgan IKaw). eo JR: 1. Shawn Highland (KIwi. better tie-breaker scores to edge out Husky-mounted Kent Perkins for the overall win by 16 seconds. Palenske (Honda Support/LeBard & Underwood Honda/O'Neal DistribuLing) avoided the crashes in the dust that did in some of his competitors. Scott Sampson (KTM) was one of the victims, returning to camp just a short while after starting. Scott stopped for a minor trailside adjustment, got a little bit behind, then crashed hard while trying to make up time, bending his bike and ringing his bell. Wisely he limped back to camp. and hung it up. . Duralube rider Randy Kemp (Han) almost became the third rider lO zero the course but hit check K just one second too late, which added one point to his score - he had to settle for third overall. All of the top three riders were mounted on 250s, beating the first Open bike, which came in at fourth overall, Yamaha-mounted Rick Arnold. The course itself got mixed reviews. Speeds were realistic, but dust combined with sporadic danger marking caused more than a few get-offs. The most memorable course obstacle was a four-foot hole dug by a miner located just off the trail about 0.2 miles off the start of loop one. Listening to the riders talk, most of them crashed into the unmarked hole. Anne Crawshaw, event. referee, was flabbergasted. "We must have ridden that section a dozen times and none of us ever noticed the hole" she said, shaking her head. "The rider's lines took them just enough off the trail and into the hole which was hidden from their line of sight." Since the start of the second loop was also the same as the first, the hole got marked off quick." There were a few instances of riders corning over a blind rise into some dangerous rain ruts which caused some anxious moments. But other than these instances, most of the riders seemed to enjoy the course. The general consensus was that the second loop was the favorite - fun terrain at reasonable speeds. A very sneaky check (check H) just3.4 miles from the end' of loop two caught many riders early, a definite no-no which cost them precious points. In at seventh overall was the first Senior rider, Harry Keast (Mai) who is locked into a struggle (or the number one plate with archrival Ron Fry (Han) who dropped three points and finished fourth in class - that tightene Masecher (Honl; 3.
