TEri YEARS ~ AGO Roger DeCoster and his works RN370 swept both motos of the Road Atlanta round of the Trans-AMA Motocross Series in Flowery Branch, Georgia. DeCoster won the first mow easily, then had a full-on fight with Maico's Adolph Wei! in the second round, .taking the win when the latter pulled wide in a corner on the last lap. Weil's pair of seconds was good for the runner-up placing, with American Jim Pomeroy taking a 4-3 third overall on a Bultaco. Marty Smith rode his Team Honda mount to win both mows of the 250cc Support class. Husky rider Kent Howerton was second with a 3-2. George Hendricks (Yam) and Mike McGowan (Bul) were the A class winners of the California Enduro Riders Association's Fools Gold Enduro in northern California. The enduro was beset by a number of problems, incl uding course sabotage, a murder-minded individual in a pink Jeep, and California Highway Patrol harrassment. Four squad cars in the remote forest area handed out innumerable tickets, but at least one rider got away. According to author Ron Schneiders, "One rider, who for obvious reasons is going to remain unidentified, was limping back to the start on a disabled bike, going very slowly. A CHP cop saw him, swung his car across the road and jumped out. The rider told it this way: 'I didn't have any mirror so 1 wasn't going to SlOp, and here was this police car blocking almost all of the road. 1 sure wasn't going to run into that. Off the edge of the road was a IO-foot embankment. 1 didn't want ·to go down that because 1was already bruised from crashing. The only place that was left was where the CHP guy was standing, so what could 1 do? 1 gassed itl' ... By the time the cop got back up the embankment and went, siren screaming, past the camp, the rider was in his vehicle, undressed, and his wife had the plates off his scooter!" Robert Grogg and Andreas Graber continued their domination of MotoAMA sidecar motocross series on a Norton/Wasp, winning the Simi Valley, California, round of the Series. John Palfreyman and Joe Gardner were the top Americans, finishing fourth overall on a Triumph Wasp.
