sored Scot Harden only seconds behind until engine problems forced him out. At the end of lap one, Means had extended his lead and was now followed by 250cc Expert rider Todd Kennedy with l25cc Expert rider Jamie Tucker in tow. First Amateur at fourth overall was Yamaha rider Steve Kosman followed by Open riders Greg Bringle and Honda rider Jim Butts. Coming through in seventh overall was 125 Cagiva-mounted Ed Foland, blistering his way through the pack after a poor start. Vet Expert Ed Mundy followed at eighth overall. Midway through the race, Means continued to lead and the Kennedy/ Tucker battle for second overall had been decided in favor of Kennedy. Matt Hope, a 250 Yamaha rider, had come up through the pack to move into fourth overall after Kosman, lost in the dust, inadvertently missed a check and lost a lap. Bringle remained in fifth overall. Vet Expert Brett Cushing passed his way into sixth overall with Butts following. Foland had dropped out of the race due to engine problems just after pitting on the first lap. This left a battle for second 125 between S.D. Kawasaki West rider Bob Bell and Yamaha-mounted Roy Basin. After three loops, the top seven positions were holding with Kennedy gaining some breathing space from Tucker. Bell had secured second place for himself and Vet Mundy was running ninth overall. Mike McCoy, a I25cc Amateur, was now 10th overall. As the checkered flag dropped, Means took the overall win. Kennedy· won his class by placing second overall. The 125cc win went to Tucker in third overall. "I passed Todd for a while, but couldn't keep up with his power on the flats," said Tucker. Hope took second 250cc Expert with his fourth-overall finish. The second Open finisher was Amateur Bringle in fifth overall. Up- Tite Husqvarna rider Brett Cushing was sixth overall for the Vet class win. Butts took second Open Expert with his seventh-place finish. In eighth overall was second I25cc Expert Bob Bell. Vet Experts Mundy and Claude Maynard finished 9-10. At II th and 12th overall were class winners Mike McCoy (125ccAm) and Bryan Hart (250cc Am). The first Senior rider across the line was Amateur Dave Knutson at 20th overall. Results OPEN EX: 1. Jimmy Means; 2. Jim Butts. 250 EX: 1. Todd Kennedy; 2. Matt Hope; 3. Bill Berroth. 125 EX: 1. Nampa, Idaho, to do battle with some of AMA District 36's best motocrossers at the Flying W's Fall MX. And he put a dent in local favorite Robbie Hadlock's long string of victories here by winning the Open Expert class with a 2-1 score. Hadlock was also stopped in the 125s by Jeff Cloutier. This race was the first of the 1984 Northern Nevada State MX Championship Series, resulting in a record entry of 162 riders. The big story this time was the track itself. The Flying W's had to change location and their new track was very long (about two miles) and technical with big elevation changes, 0[£ cambers, and steep sidehill turns. The track would have been manageable, except that due the award of the worst possible race date, this race race was held during Winnemucca's Dust Time. That'means the all-time worst MX dust ever. If you weren't the leader, you were both blind and invisible in a dust cloud. Air cleaners plugged solid during 15-minute motos. ONFs and no-starts also reached a record high. Five of the nine Open Expert entries ONF, as well as more than half of a couple other classes, with most problems dust-related. The Flying W's kept three water trucks humping but they were not much help. In the first Open Expert moto, Rick Woodson (Suz) grabbed an early lead which he held until he broke down. Then Hadlock (Hon) took the point until his air filter plugged, leaving the lead to Beau Hibdon (KTM) with Wright closing in with a blubbering engine (air filter, too). So it was Hibdon, Wright, and Hadlock so far. Hibdon didn't start the second moto and Wright got in front early to save his air cleaner and stayed there. Hadlock chased hard for second spot and Woodson saved third. So the overall scores went: Wright 2-1, Hadlock 3-2, and Todd Arndell (Kaw) 4-4. In the 250cc Experts, Hadlock nabbed the holeshot but missed the double jump and w.as penalized a lap. Then Wright took the lead until he slowed with a plugged air cleaner to finish fourth. Hadlock kept cooking to make up the lap; then Allan Berlutti (Yam) and Cloutier (Suz) broke loose to challenge him. First moto finish was Hadlock, Berlutti, and Coutier. The second moto saw the best racing of the day. Wright got in front early and stayed there. But the Had10ckiBeriutti and Cloutier/Woodson duels for 2-3 and 4-5 got exciting. Wheel to wheel, elbow to elbow, bumping and grinding each other, they physically battled for their respective positions. It finally turned out Wright, Hadlock, and Berluttl. So the overall was based on Hadlock's 1-2, Wright's 4-1, and Berlutti's 2-3. • Results OPEN EX: 1. J. Wright (Hon): 2. R. Hadlock (Hon); 3. T. Arndell (Kaw), 250 EX: 1. R. Hadlock (Han); 2. J.
