Reynard, Campbell, Frampton rock at Sunny Valley IT By Clay Ught SUNNY VALLEY, OR, ocr. 6 Grants Pass speedsters Greg Reynard and Jeff Campbell took thrilling 250cc A and Open A main events at Sunny Valley Winner Jim Vreeke leads Todd Brubaker (9301. Jay Tanner (691 and Denny Fryer in the 750Cc Superbike class at Willow Springs. ARRA Willow victory to Vreeke By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, ocr. 7 Jim Vreeke clinched the American Road Raci,ng AssociationlWillow Springs Superbike Series title as he flew to his . \ 38 eighth straight win, besting Hondamounted Todd Brubaker. Vreeke also gained me club's overall points lead after former points leader Bob Reinen blew up another new motor, continuing his streak of bad luck. Vreeke Led me race stan to finish, duplicating most of his performances this year; he was clocking I:32 lap times - the same times that took him to founh in Willow's AMA National last month. Brubaker chaJIenged for the lead, piloting his brand new 750 Interceptor Superbike. In his first race since an injury sidelined him in early August, Brubaker shadowed Vreeke the first half of the 10-lap event, but at the £lag, Vreeke held a six-second advantage. Denny "Freeway" Fryer and Jay Tannerfoughtover the mird position, and by me eighth Lap Fryer started to pull away. Tanner, who's been faUing off a lot lately, did it again in the last half of the last lap. He caught a false neutral entering turn mree and lost me front end, crashing and breaking his wrist. Fryer rode unmolested to take the last paying position! Earlier in the day, Vreeke and Brubaker diced in the Fl match, but Brubaker, in his first ride on the new bike, hada bitof trouble getting used to shifting the Honda and couldn't keep up. Vreeke took the win, Brubaker finished a disappointing second place, but had a comfortable edge over TZ250-rider Clint Whitehouse in mird. The 450cc Superstreet had been touted in me pits as the race to watch - the showdown between me young lions and the "old man". Forty-twoyear-old Frank Callinicos teased young MikeHaller and John Thor~ LOn unmerafully before me race; hIS psychology seemed to work. That and the $1000 he recently sunk into his RD250LC. Callinicos stole me lead from Thornton by the third lap and showed the boys me way to the checkers. Haller pitted on me mird lap after his shift lever fell off, then returned to the race two laps down. Haller was out for blood - he rode to turn three and stopped, on me track, waiting for Callinicos. Haller took off just as Callinicos got close and tried to race with him. Callinicos had enough trouble of his own, without worrying about Haller. His swingarm bushings had gone bad, and hedeveloped a nasty wobble, so bad mat he almost knocked Thornton off his bike as mey went down the front straigh L. But Callinicos went on to take the win, and couldn't wait to rub it in to the other two. "These guys are gonna have to start calling me 'Daddy' now, I'm old enough to be both of their fathers," said Callinicos afterward. He won again in the 450cc LC race, finishing five seconds ahead of Thornton. Alex White took third. The rivalry between Chris Crowell and Marty Sharpe continued in 750cc 'Box Stock. Crowell took the victory after a tough duel with Sharpe and Kenny Kopecky. Kopecky took a close mird. Nigel Gale took his 600cc Suzuki Katana to the 750cc Production win, holeshotting me start and retaining the top spot to win over Crowell and Sharpe. Crowell and Sharpe fought hard for the second position, with Crowell me victor. Sharpe threatened earlier to protest Crowell if beaten for a modified brake-stay arm, but decided against it. Wayne Frampton swept through the season in the 200cc class, controlling start to finish. Frampton has practically grown up at Sunny Valley Raceway and he proved once again that he is unbc;atable, winning in the same fashIOn that he has all season. Rick Beck and Ron Fields did all they could to keep the local speedster in sight but to no avail and filled the place and show spots. . . Reynard (Grants Pass Hon) put hIS CR250-based flat tracker into a commanding lead after a holeshot in the 250cc A main event. Coming into the championship race Reynard and Campbell were 1-2 in the points and with Campbell sitting this one out it gave Reynard- the opportunity LO clinch the 250cc crown. Reynard, Bob Klum (Hon) and Tom Bushman blazed the trail for their comrades and filled out the trophy spots at the completion of the event. Campbell sat the pole on his ProTec/Hi-Point/Out Front/Simpsonbacked Yamaha TT5oo' Campbell took the lead and proceeded to waltz away at a National pace while Klum and Reynard swapped it out for second not far behind at the finish. Martin masters PRRO Firebird RR By John' Arthur Burrus PHOENIX, AZ, ocr. 7 Splitting the hairline between disaster and total performance, Team Razor's Craig Martin, sponsored by Cave Radiator of Kingman, Arizona, piloted a boxstock Honda 500 Interceptor around the entire field of Production Stock and Super Street bikes in the Phoenix Road Racing Organization's second event of the 1984-1985 season. In the process Martin beat everything from Ninjas to large displacement Hondas, set a new PRRO lap record for the road circuit at Firebird' International Raceway, and took home first-place trophies in Production Stock C and Super Street C categories. Kevin Elliott won Stock Production A on a turbocharged Kawasaki 750 from Motorcycle & Marine, Nava and Lancer Leathers. Elliott was followed by Richard Kohn on a Ninja, then Robbin Bender. After a long lay-off, David Wright (County Cycle) raced a 750 Honda Interceptor to the win in Stock Production B followed by Frank Wesley, Jr. and William Pryor. In the Super Street event, shortened due to a crash, jeff Anderson (Motorcycle & Marine and Nava) jumped IQ an early lead and held on with his 900 Honda until Mike Williams, mounted atop last year's 750 Suzuki, caught him on lap four. Williams rode in from for one lap but by then Martin had threaded his way through the pack on his 500 Imerceptor and led the rest of me way. Since all three front riders were competing in differem classes, each won: Anderson in Super Street A, Williams in Super Street B and Martin in Super Street C. Evans rides to S.I.R. MX win By Susan D. Brown KENT, WA, SEPT. 30 Unseasonally warm weather greeted spectators and racers for the first event in the fall Northwest Challenge, the series billed as the countdown to the Kingdome Supercross. In moLO one of 125cc Pros, Kent Kawasaki's Lonn Inman grabbed me early lead over Renton Honda's jeff Sowards. Sowards took a big spill but after a few minutes was up and in the chase again. At the halfway point it was Checkpoim Yamaha rider Rob Evans out front with Inman in second and Sowards still on the move. Inman finally captured the win with Evans taking second in spite of laking a fall. Sowards took mird. The start of moto two played the same with Inman out front and Sowards in second. Sowards got by Inman and Evans followed him into second place. Sowards and Evans were really putting on a show. First to the checkers was Evans with Sowards taking second.
