Hoenshells bomb Oklahoma MX C'ship By TIm Tolleson OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, SEPT. 15 In third round action of the Oklahoma StateChampionship Series at Motorcycle Raceways, Clay Hoenshell took his 250 Suzuki to the Expert win, and his brother Chuck topped the 500cc Amateurs. KTM pilot Billy Denton over_ came a bad start in the first Over 30 on his way to a perfect score. Clay Hoenshell holeshot the first Expert moLO, but Honda-mounted Michael Hammer dove inside Hoenshell in turn two. Hammer almost lost it exiting turn three when the front wheel of his CR250 washed out. As Hammer lost forward motion, Hoenshell, Jim Thomas and Whisperin Smith slipped past. Hammer set his sights on Smith's YZ490. and Smith began pressuring YZ490-mounted Thomas, who yielded LO the pressure on the third lap. mith took over second when Thomas fell in the Sturn, and Hammer slipped by also. While the place and how position were being decided, Hoenshell was styling with a 15-second lead. Smith finished second over Hammer, and Tommy Ash took fourth. Hammer hole hot the second moLO over Smith and Hoenshell. The slick S-tum claimed Smith as he tried LO slip under Hammer. Hoen hell made his move on the back straight and dropped Hammer to second. The Honda pilot slid out under the bridge, and Smith had nowhere to go but down. Ash took over second and Smith recounted before Hammer for third. While Hoenshell cruised to the win, Smith mounted a successful charge for second over Ash, whose 4-3 rides earned him third overall. Chuck Hoenshell powered his Yamaha to the 500cc Amateur holeshot over the Hondas of Jere Fletchall and John Davis. Hoenshell survived all challenges to take the win over Fletchall and Davis. In the second moLO Hoenshell again held off Fletchall for the win. Jim Fletchall finished third behind brother Jere; Jim's (5-3) rides earned him third overall. In Over 30 action, Gary Drummond holeshot moLO one over Kenny Butler and Jerry Morrison. On the second lap Butler crashed over the doubles, and Morrison took over second with Jim Redwine third on a Maico. Denton dispatched Redwine and Morrison, then set his sights on Drummond. By the end of lap three, Denton took the lead from the Yamaha-mounted Drummond and Redwine dispatched Morrison for third. In the second moto, Denton holeshot over Drummond and Morrison. Charlie Magness and Redwine freight-trained past Morrison in the hairpin before the back straight, but 'Redwine almost landed on Magness after the next jump. VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 15 Kawasaki rider George Vlach parlayed a 3-1 moLO tally into first overall in the 125cc Junior class as the Answer Saturday motocross series at Indian Dunes. Vlach led out of the gate in the first moLO, but was eventually dropped LO third by Jimmy Lewis and Joey Abbinanti. Lewis and Abbinanti went on to create a duel for the lead that had the sparks flying, but at the end of the race it was Lewis first across the line over Abbinanti and Vlach. Vlach came back to lead the second moLO start to fini h over Rob Sassen and Lewis. Abbinami was trapped in the back of the pack at the tart, and worked hi way to seventh in the 18rider field. Overall it was Vlach, Lewis and Davis POller (5-4). Accurate Racing rider Russ Wageman led the first250 c Pro moLO start LO finish. Jim Holley pressured for a while, but then he DNF when the transmission on his 1985 pre-production Yamaha locked up over a jump and the machine spit him off. With Holley out, Jim Anderson LOok over second with Tony Toste finishing third over Mike Beier and Tracy Oswell. Wageman led itagain as the second moto got underway, but this time it wasn't a wire-LO-wire affair. Beier and A.J. Whiting jammed past and Wageman was left LO finish third in front of a LOoth and nail battle between Mike Fisher and Toste that eventually went in Fisher's favor.
