TErt YEARS AGO ... Ontario MOLOr Speedway in southern California was the site of the AMA's Final ational road race of the year, and it drew an international field. At the end of two 100-mile segments, however, it was Americans finishing 1-2-3. Yamaha's Gene Romero won the first heat, then placed second in the other LO take the overall win, over teammate Kenny Roberts' 3-1. Privateer Jim Evans (Yam) was third with a 2-3, while Suzukimounted Barry Sheene broke the American string with a 5-4 fourth overall. Multi-time World Champ Giacomo Agostini entered the race on a TZ700, but crashed on the first lap of the first segment and was out for the day. In the Junior/Expert combined event, Roberts was unstoppable, topping Harley-Davidson riders Ron Pierce and Jim Dunn_ In the Junior race, the win went to Randy Cleek after an early duel with Pat Hennen, who finished second over Walt Foste.r. While Skip Aksland had little trouble winning the ovice race, Georgia's Dale Singleton cut through the pack £rom a second-wave start to finish second. And in the other event of the weekend, BMW rider Reg Pridmore bested Kawasaki pilots Steve McLaughlin and Yvon DuHamel. Roger DeCoster and Gerrit Wolsink finished 1-3 in the fiTSt moLO, but it looked like Wolsink would take the overall win based on a better secondmoLO finish, until Bengt Abe.rg's Bultaco broke with two laps to go and that moved DeCoster up enough to give him the overall win. Hakan Anderson (Yam) was third with a 5-4, while Bultaco's Jim Pomeroy captured LOp American honors with a 2-8 fourth overall. Husky rider Kent Howerton captured the 250cc Support class. Out-of-staters were on hand for the weekly Ascot half mile, just a week before a National half mile was slated for the Gardena, California, oval. Michigan's Corky Keener took the main event with Iowa's Steve Droste in tow. It looked like another Michigan rider would win the Junior final as Jay Springsteen led the first five laps of the final, only to have his rear tire go flat, allowing California's Skip AksIand to take an easy win. Steve Eklund overcame a slide-out in his heat race and dominated the Novice main. Ridinga streamliner powered by twin Yamaha TZ700 engines, Don Vesco broke the mOLOrcycle land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. His two-way average of 281.702 mph broke the 265 mph mark set by the late Cal Rayborn. Tom Penton, just back from the ISDT, won the 150-mile AMA National Enduro in Cayuta, New.
