Larry Brooks (above) gets bumped from behind by A.J. Whiting. (Below) Brooks. Eddie Warran and Whiting battle for second on 126s. Mark Barnett made his first appearance in the Trans-Cal Series riding a new works 250. He finished second both times out. of Kehoe, Whiting, Manneh and Ryan. 12 250cc Pro Eric Eaton captured the holeshot at the stan of the first moto inch~ ahead of Yamaha-pilots Russ Wageman and Jim Anderson, and Barnett. During the first lap, Barnett quickly displaced Anderson and Wageman, while O'Mara was in the middle of the pack crashing. Coming out of a right turn up a hill, O'Manl bailed and was plowed into by Whiting. O'Mara re-entered the race trailing the field by quite a distance. Up front, Eaton enjoyed a comfortable lead over Barnen, about four seconds. Barnett, riding a new works Suzuki with an '82 works gas tank, couldn't gain any ground on Eaton in the early part of the moto, while Anderson, Micky Dymond (riding an '85 production single-shock, watercooled Husqvarna), Wageman and Je££ Hicks fought over third. Dymond moved into fourth during the eighth lap but dropped to sixth two laps later. Anderson had a semi-comfortable lead over Hicks, who had Wageman hot on his tail. Eventually, Wageman found a way past Hicks, while Dymond did the same a lap later. With a few laps remaining, the distance between Eaton and Barnell stayed about the same. Eaton went on to take the win ahead of Barnett, Wageman, Dymond, Hicks and Anderson. O'Mara climbed back lO ninth in the 36-rider field. The second mota was all O·Mara's. He grabbed the holeshot with Barnett, Eaton, Anderson, Whiting and Hicks in tow. Barnett stayed close lO O'Mara for the first few laps, before the O'Show pulled away. The distance between Barnell and Eaton grew slightly as the race progressed. Whiting followed inJourth ahead of Brian Manley, Dymond and Hicks. When the checkered £lag appeared, O'Mara easily captured the win ahead of Barnett, Eaton, Whiting, Manley, Dymond and Hicks. Wageman crossed the finish line in ninth while pushing his Yamaha - it had run out of 'ga turn-Defore the finish. Before the race, Wageman's gas cap broke, so he had to wrap a cloth around the· top. He was covered with gasoline at the finish. 600cc Pro The first 500cc molO saw Hondamounted Mike Larson steal the holeshot with Rodney Smith on an '83 YZ490, JT-sponsored Fisher on an '85 production water-cooled Honda, Gene Gentsch and Chandler chasing. On the third lap, Smith started slowing because of a £lat rear tire; he eventually dropped out of contention. Chandler took control of third, but soon dropped lO fourth after crashing. This made the first four Larson, Fisher, Mike Larson and Chandler. Phil Larson's lead was diminishing with each turn as Fisher closed in. Halfway through the race, Fisher moved in on and pas ed Phil Larson for the lead. In no time, Fisher claimed a comfortable lead, while Chandler found a way around Mike Larson. With a few laps remaining, Chandler began closing ground on Phil Larson, but time ran out for Magoo. Fisher, who normally is found aboard a 125, went away with his first win aboard a 500. Phil Larson tooksecond closely followed by Chandler, Mike Larson, Honda-mounted Willy Simons, Husky rider Billy Grossi, Tony Wanket and John Reinholt. Mike Larson took the early lead at the start of the second malO with Chandler, Simons, Fisher. Smith and M-Star's Greg Zitterkopf chasing. Mike and Chandler pulled away from the pack during the first few laps, while Fisher hounded Simons. During the fourth lap, Chandler went to the outside over a jump and out- powered Mike in the following straight to take the lead. At the same time, Fisher slipped past Simons for third, and soon caught up to Mike Larsdn. Just before the halfway point, Fisher went to the inside of Larson in an o££-camber right turn and took second. The gap between Chandler and Fisher was about eight seconds, and Fisher was able to shorten that time by a few seconds, but that was all he could gain on Chandler. However, Fisher knew that if Chandler won, a second in the moto would still give him the overall. So, Fisher rode conserva tivel y for a second in the molO and overall win. Chandler's secondmolO win gave him second overall. After Chandler in the second mota came Simons, Mike Larson, Smith, Zitterkopf, Wanket and Yamaha rider Jim Ellis. • Results MINI EX: 1.
