Johnson, Huffman Jam at Clarks 8ranchMX By Clay Ught ROSEBURG, OR, SEPT. 16 Brad Johnson and Ryan Huffman were among the few double-moto winners at Clarks Branch Motocross. Johnson did 38 " the dirty deeds in the 250cc B class and nabbed runner-up laurels in the I25cc Bclass behind local Mark Wattman (Kaw). Huffman performed a II stranglehold of the Pee Wee B class. A horde of Open/125cc B riders and 125cc/Open Pros ran combined in the first moto ofthe day. Wattman broke free from early traffic and led the field around the long, hilly track and had Pros Steve Nelson (Yam-Hon of Roseburg) and teammate Chad Klingbeil (Hon) in tow. Johnson (Kaw) and fellow Californian Donny • • Htlrrell(Vam)dle&.1i WalullQD,.Nel••• . son and Klingbeil all the way to the flag. Dave Nordin (Hon) and Monte Smith (Hon) were 1-2 in the Open B portion. The second moto saw Open Pro Gary Bault (Hon) blitz the competition and lead start to finish followed, distantly by Paul Christensen (Hon) and Phoenix's Dean Gallegos (Hon). Bault burried the field to win the Pro . class while Wattman went'l-I in the I 25cc B class as did I 25cc Pro winner Nelson. Christensen's 3-1 was good for the Open B honors. The Old Timers and 250cc Bclasses got to mix it up and it was Johnson putting a Honda in frontofa IS-rider field with AMA flat track Expert Jeff Harsha (Hon) hounding from the rear. Off-road specialist Fritz Martin (Hus) rode in third with Ron Milligan (Hon) and Old Timer Rick Smith (Yam) in the top five. Johnson led all nine laps and took the first moto over Milligan and Harsha. Smith got the Old Timer victory over Elmer Reimer (Hon) and Virginia's'Mike Bowman (Suz). The second outing was also Johnson's from the drop of the gate with Harsha beating Milligan to finish runner-up. Smith smoked the "old guys" with his I-I to beat Reimer's 2-2 and the 4-4 tally of Charlie Standeford (Mai). Results PRO: 1. Gary Bault (Han); 2. Steve Nelson (Han); 3. Chad Klingbeil (Han). . HOME, In, SEPT. 8 Idaho native Jo Jo Wright moved to northern California this year to pursue a career as a professional motocrosser. He is getting faster, and it showed as he came back home to Idaho for the weekend and uncorked a win in the Open Pro, and second in the 250cc Pro classes in the Optimist/Budweiser Supercross. The desert town of Mt. Home has had MX racing before in a large, outdoor setting, but a tight, stadium race was a first. If This event was any indication, stadium racing will return soon; a well-prepared track, good lighting, great racing, and a loud spectator section. Things started fast with the Minis. Larry Ward (Kaw), journeyed down from Woodinville, Washington, and absolutely destroyed the Mini Expert class, both motos. Ward was running lap times close to the Pros, as he lapped most of the field! The 125cc Pros lined up to do battle, and disappointed no one with their wild antics. Desen racer Daniel Huskey (Suz) pulled out an awesome lead in moto one, only to have Corey Barton (Kaw) catch up and pass in the late laps. In moto two, Huskey again looked great, butcouldn'tquite match the more-experienced Barton for pure speed. Behind the duo, Larry Jackson (Yam) pulled out a third for a little cash. Desert racers were again in evidence in the 250cc Novice class, as Rob Johnson (Yam) edged out the win over Linsey Lockwood (Yam) and Jeff Murray (Hon). ;rite 25000-Pso dass was thealiil~~ • favorite again, with Wright back home, wanting to show his old riding buddies how fast he was getting. Mark Hall was back from an injuryinduced retirement, and eastern Idaho's Rock Temple wanted to show western Idaho how to go fast. Hall and Wright earned a draw, with Wright going 1-2, and Hall getting the overall wi th a 2-1. Both were stupendous, as they flew dozens of feet over the stadium jumps. Temple had a rotten night with assorted crashes, but hedid earn a case of beer by being the only rider to clear the Budweiser Triple Jumps! It was outrageous; Temple had to swing out, get a huge run, and have a lot of guts. He flew about 12 feet in the air for about 40 feet, and his jump earned a huge roar from the crowd.
