By Kit Palmer New colors and refinements are the watchwords for Yamaha's 1985 motocrossers: they're red-and-white now, just like European models, not yellow and black, and they don't sport any radical changes. The newest feature is found on t~e YZI2~, YZ250and YZ490, an Innovation Yamaha calls 30 Brake Actuated Suspension System (B.A.S.S.), designed toeliminate what many Yamaha riders have come to know as the "Yamahop" encountered when braking over bumps. A cable connects the rear brake pedal to the rear shock reservoir; when the brake is applied the cable pulls a linkage ,whith varies the preload on the>r~sell- '.' voir blow-off valve springs and reduces compression damping between 60 to +~~. YZ125, YZ250 and YZ490all have a front disc brake, stronger rims with steel spoke nipples, stronger swingarms, composite instead of steel reed valves,. an .additional bearing surface for the clutch arm, aluminum. silencers with steel cores and easier access to the foam air filler.
