Vintage riders steam past a backdrop of Steamboat Springs condominiums. The 1.7-mile course wound through town.
Beno Rodi's Norton single was one of the prettier machines on the track.
Rodi was credited with the pre-1950 win.
Riding the Team Obsolete Matchless G50 he used to win at Daytona and
Isle of Man, Dave Roper won the 500cc Premier class.

Thunder of a different kind
echoed through'the resort town
of Steamboat Springs as the
.Mountain Roadtacing Associa-
20
tion played host to a vintage road
race through the streets of the town.
A 1.7-mile track was laid out, winding through the apartments and condos that house thousands of skiers
through the winter. There were
hazards in the form of curbs, poles,
ditches and boulders along the track,
and although the MRA did a good
job with hay bales, some hazards
remained.
Team Obsolete's Dave Roper won
the three purse-payin~classes, riding
an Aermacchi to win the 350ccrace, a
Matchless G50 to win the 500s, and
Dick Mann's old BSA triple to top
Formula 750. Teammate Jeff Elghnayan followed him home in the latter two.
The $1500 purse - $500 per race
-was donated by Castro I Oil, Bell
Helmets and GS Performance.
The MRA also ran all its regular
road racing classes on the track.
Results from that event as soon as
they are available.
