While Lange and Michlitsch battled for the Open laurels, Watilo, Hall, Hart and Joe Spangler (Suz) led the small-bores. Lange went on to conuol the Open class, while Hall nailed Watilo late in the moto to take a I-I tally inlO Sunday's action. Hall's Sun Products/Marushin/ Silkolene-sponsored Honda grabbed the lead in the first 250cc Pro molO. Hall quickly split from Lange (who unloaded in the loamy sand), and took the win with ease as Lange and Michlitsch followed. The second moto again saw HaJJ flee from the pack to win with ease. Sunday Sunday's opening moto was the 125cc Pros, led by Hart and David Hettinga. The two KX riders looked ready to leave the field, but Hettinga crashed and moved Watilo and Hall up a spot. Hart then yielded to Watilo, who went on to lead until late in the moLO when Hall got by for the win. Hall got his best start in the fourth moLO and blitzed away while Watilo, Hart and Klettke held down top spots. Watilo rode at a rampant pace, but still couldn't stay with Hall, whose 1-1-1-1 netted him top bucks. Watilo (3-2-2-2) took second over Hart (4-33-3). Hall had an easy time LOpping the combined 25Occ/Open Pro field as Lange, Michlitsch and Earle fought for positions behind him. John Woodley would have been Hall's closest foe, but he took a terrible tumble and left Hall free 10 take the 250cc win and beat Lange. Michlitsch held orr Earle for second in the Open class. MOLO two was much the same except for Michlitsch, who had troubles and lost his second overall in the Opens LO Earle. Hall and Lange finished 1-2 in the moLO, each sweeping his class. 0 • Results (Above) Eric Hall altered horizons on his way to a double win in Albany. Hall went eight for 30 eight in moto wins, taking the 125 and 250cc Pro classes both days. Doug Lange cleaned up in the Open Pros as well, winning all fOUT molOS going away. Saturday Lange (Town Center Yamaha/MX Fox YZ), Tim Michlitsch (Yamaha Support/Malcolm Smith YZ), Mark Spooner (Yam) and Richard Earle led orr the start of the first Open Pro molO. They were followed by a horde of 125s led by Kawasaki riders Robby Watilo, Mike Klettke and Grayson Hart. Hall worked his way past Hart as well as both Klettke and Watilo (who crashed) and went on to win the 125cc portion behind Open riders Lange and Michlitsch. Moto two saw Lange, Michlitsch By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, SEPT. 14 Yamaha of Barstow Bob Brand won a closely fought 250cc Novice battle at Corona Raceway, edging Yamaha-mounted Billie Paugh out of the overall by winning the second moLO. Don Litteral (Hon) rounded turn one in the lead of the first molO with Steve Reed (Hon) and Paugh (Ace Brake and AI ignmem) charging after him. Paugh moved into second on the first lap, and Brand also went by 10 drop Reed to fourth. Litteral quickly came under fire from both Paugh and Brand, and on lap two was passed by both riders in the hills. Tom Gergen (Hon) didn't give Litteral much relief when he soon began 10 challenge for third, but a lap later Todd Hayes (Suz) dropped them both a position when he passed on the first uphill. Out front Paugh was extending his lead in the hills, but Brand, pushed by Hayes, would make up the distance through the infield. On lap four Brand made an attempt to pass Paugh, but instead of taking the lead was nipped by Hayes. Paugh had an easier time getting away from the Suzuki pilot and went on to win by a few seconds, while Hayes and Brand fought for second right down 10 the last tum. Hayes held the inside and forced Brand over the berm, but instead of getting .second he endedup a II th due one-tip Penalty for course cutting. Brand was credited with second, and Mark Fitzgerald, aboard a Suzuki, came by next for third ahead of Litteral. Paugh rocketed into the lead of the second moto ahead of Fiugerald, Honda-mounted Kenny Maddux and Brand. Maddux quickly moved to second, and Brand went LO third as Fiugerald fell back 10 ninth. Brand went by Maddux on lap two, then rapidly moved in on Paugh. After pursuing Paugh for a lap Brand took the lead and began LO move away, while Maddux began LO put some pressure on the Yamaha pilot in an effort to gain second. Maddux got Paugh on the next go-'round, but with just over a lap to go Brand was already too far ahead. Brand held a safe lead 10 the checkers, finishing a good distance clear of Maddux. Paugh couldn't get close enough to try a pass on Maddux and had 10 settle for third, with Rick Merrill (Hon) fourth. A sixth in the first moto gave Merrill third overall. Results PEE WEE 9-: 1. Baylands MX has a winner Heare By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, SEPT. 12 Baylands Raceway's 20th rounds of Continental Motosports Club-sanctioned night MX saw George Heare perform spectacularly in only his second appearance at Baylands. In the 250cc Junior molO one, his charge to the front was thwarted by more determined efforts of John Zender (Yam) and Frank Walker (Yam). Heare had the lead briefly but was pushed back by the Zender/Walker duel. Zender won the previous molO, but had the victory nullified for racing in the wrong molO and was lucky enough that the race schedule permitted him to fit into the correct moto, albeit a little tired and disappointed. His victory in the correct moto was a popular one. In moto two it was Heare on his Milpitas Honda out in front. Coaching by long-time friend, 250cc Pro John Dauth, did seem to help. Finishing second overall was Mike West (Yam) who turned in a 4-3 evening to top Zender with his 1-8. He was running second behind Heare prior to a spill. Results 80 NOV; 1. _ _lSull.
