Scou Manning, riding a Yamaha. Manning captured the holeshot and instantly jumped to a commanding lead. In Manning's dust followed Honda-mounted Tim Worth, Yamaha rider Jim Ellis, Honda pilot Mike Lar en and M-Star's Greg Zitterkopf. Chandler had a poor start back in about 10th, then worked his way towards the front before crashing overthe lriplejumps. Honda's Danny Chandler was the first rider to jump all three jumps in one leap the lap before, but his second attempt, while trying to pass a rider, failed. Chandler recovered about mid pack. Up front. Manningenjoyed a comfortable lead, while Ellis passed Larson for second. Halfway through the moto, Ellis pulled off the track with a broken shock. This gave second back to Larson ahead of Zitterkopf; Tony Wanket, on a Yamaha, and Worth. However, Chandler was on the move, and a few laps later was in fifth behind Larson, who had dropped back. Chandler passed Larsen, but a lap later, Larsen repassed Chandler. A few seconds later, Chandler dove inside of Larsen in a turn, and took fourth. During the following straight, Chandler intentionally rode right through a mud hole, covering Lar· sen's goggles with mud. This gave Chandler just enough of an edge to pull away. Manning easily took the win ahead of Zitterkopf, Wanket, Chandler and Larsen. Chandler took tbe second-moto hoJeshot inches ahead of Ellis at the start of the second moto. Manning was about 10th but gaining ground quickly; however, Manning crashed over the triple jumps trying to make a pass. He recovered near the back of the pack but picked off eight riders less than a lap later. Chandler had a commanding-lead, while Larson worked into second fol· lowed by Ziuerkopf. Halfway through the moto, Lar· en fell in a tight right turn handing Ziuerkopf second. Larsen recovered to claim third but quite a distance behind Ziuerkopf. As the race neared the end, Chandler had a large lead ahead of Ziuerkopf, but if Ziuerkopf took second in the moto, the M·Star rider would claim the overall. But with three laps remaining, Ziuerkopf's M-Star developed ignition problems and quit running. Zitterkopf pu hed his bike from a sure overall victory. In fourth, Manning had to pass Ellis to claim the victory, but the distance was too great as Chandler crossed the finish line in first for first overall. Larson took second ahead of Ellis, Manning, Brett Cahors and Cagiva's Ron Turner. "I tried to pass a rider in the triple jumps but came up short," said Manning. "Then I was so worried about getting past everyone, I started to make mistakes. It used to be I wasn't aggressive enough, now I'm riding too aggressively." • Results 80 EX: 1.
