Ag~_ E~JtiAf1J Pmw: CARMIHCHAEL! HONDA ~ c.o FALL ~ ~CLASS.IC ] SANCTIONED On Any Sunday II and World Speedway Championship Motorcycle racing emh usiasts have usually been hard-pressed to get their fill of emertainmentas they would like to see itin the movies or on television. With the release of On Any Sunday II and World Speedway Championship, the mOlO-entertainment gap has been filled a little bit more. On Any Sunday II had limited distribution in the movie houses, so it came as no surprise that few people had the chance to see it. The sequel to Bruce Brown's classic (remember Steve McQueen racing the Elsinore GP?) picks up where the original left off, covering several modern American racing stars, including Kenny Roberts, Bruce Penhall and Bob Hannah, among Olhers. In cinema verite' style, the camera follows each of these riders as they do what they like to do best. There are spectacular racing sequences, personal interviews, and other tidbits to catch the viewer's eye. Interspersed with contemporary scenes is classic footage of events such as the Catalina GP and the Big Bear Run. In some instances, throughout the movie there's less than optimum lighting and filming conditions, but overall the film is terrific. World Speedway Championship is an original video production based on the 1982 World Individual Speedway Championships which were held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, presently the site of the 23rd Olymp~d. • This event was memorable in that it was the first to be staged in the U.S., thus providing American speedway fans a taste of what world-caliber racing is all about. The championships were also noted for controversy: Heat I4 where English rider Kenny Carter was disqualified for tangling with Bruce Penhall in turn two of the track. And after winning his second straight world championship, Penhall announced his immediate retirement [rom racing. Both occasions really stunned loyal fans of the sport. In addition lOon-trackaction, there are behind-the- cenes glimpses of riders and officials, explanations and replays of the Kenny Carter incident, and interviews with the winning riders of each heat. Expert narration and commentary complement the video which seeks to bring viewers all the excitement of the world championships as they happened. This is one of the best racing documentaries we've seen, and for speedway devotees it's a definite must-see. On Any Sunday I1 can be ordered from RCR Enterprise, Inc., Dept.
