New World Champ Eddie Lawson finished fourth. with a badly broken ankle. Italian Mauritzio Vitali won the 18-lap 125cc race, marred by the crash involving 13-times World Champion Angel Nieto. The current World Champion was challenging Vitali for the lead when he crashed his works Garelli on the 13th lap. He was rushed to the hospital with a broken right ankle, broken right hand and a broken finger. Until then it had been a tremendous battle for the lead between 39year-old Eugenio Lazzarini, making his last Grand Prix appearance, Italians Gresini, Gianola and Vitali and the unfortunate Nieto. Yitali and Nieto had just opened up a gap over their pursuers when the accident happened on a fast righthand bend. The Italian then cruised away for a comfortable victory. Swiss ace Stefan Dorflinger wrote his name into the record hooks by winning the first ever World 80cc Championship after finishing fifth on his works Zundapp. The l4-lap race was won by West German Gerhard Waibel on his Real with Spaniard Jorge Martinez second on the works Derbi. Former 50cc World Champion Dorflinger led in the early stages but slowed on the third lap when his bike started leaking from his radiator. "The tem'perature reached nearly IOoo C so I waved the others past," revealed Dorflinger who clinched his third world title, "I knew I only had to finish seventh to clinch the title and so I just took it easy and looked after the engine." • Results 500cc: 1.
