were locked in a fight for first place, and Toland took it from Oliver, who rode on sJicks, with a daring pass in sweeping turn two. Meanwhile, Team Hammer's Paulk made one lap and pitted again with an unplugged coil wire. Toland continued to lead until a lengthy pit stop at the one-hour mark, which put Team Lockhart back in first place. Wheelsmith was second followed by Ninja and Santa Barbara Riders. A few minutes later 13th-place Dale Quarterley, teamed with Kerry Bryant and Kevin Monahan on the Mr. Jags Norton, crashed in fast turn nine, unhurt. ''It was doing tank-slappers and finally just shook me off," said Quarterley. Most teams came in for fuel and a rider change at about 45-minute LO one-hour intervals, but Team Wheelsmith stayed oui for the firsLhour and 45 minutes before pitting. At each stop the team put on wheels with new tires. "The Pirellis get slippery really fast and just don't work as well as Dunlops," explained Glover. "But that's all that will fit the bike." At the end of the second hour Team Lockhart still led Wheelsmith and Ninja. Santa Barbara Riders was in fourth ahead of Team Totalled, Team Box Stock, Redmond Racing and Team Hammer. But 10 minutes later Team Lockhart pitted. Oliver went out, did two laps and pitted again, with a (Jat front tire and a seemingly-blown-up engine leaking fluid. "I think we holed a piston" said Phillips, "and just before I came in I collided with Steve Epstein's bike (a GS550) going into turn six. He came out of five, I went to pass him and he just moved over. He hit my pipe and back wheel, but I didn't even look back." Lockhart was out of the race, but later the bike started and ran. Phillips theorized that two stuck carburetor floats sent gas running into the overflow tubes and into the airbox, from which it leaked onto the engine and ground and made steam. Epstein, teamed with sister Wendy in Team Extreme, was in the pits with "electrical problems" that looked a lot like a blown engine to bystanders. Team Ninja led until 45 minutes later when their bike spun a rod bearing. "The rain was fun," said hardriding Toland of his first ride on a Ninja. "I like sliding around and I want to thank Joe Solis for lelling me ride his bike." Some watches had Toland hitting a few 1:35 lap times during his second ride with lots of I:36 and I :37 lap times. "If they hadn't dropped out we never would have caught them" said a grateful Glover later. At three-and-a-half hours Santa Barbara Riders lost two minutes in the pits replacing a chain masterlink, losing ground to gaining Team Totalled. At the finish Scoular crossed the hnish line with 139 laps to Santa Barbara's 136. Scoular thanked sponsors La Habra Yamaha, NO, Shoei, Torco, DunJopand tuner Paul Treacy. Santa Barbara Riders rode Sharpe's street-stock GS750 to second and thanked Conrad Brooks, CRF, Weigl, Advanced MaLO Tech and Dunlop. • 120,000~ Miies ~ 48,000~ ~ Laps ,~ (1) ..0 3,00,0 l Riders (1) Cf) That's how far California Superbjke School students have ridden since the school began using BEL-RAY lubricants two years ago in their GPz 550 Kawasakis.
