AMA/NATC Observed Trials Series: RoaDds 6, 7, 8 'Scott Read seeps to National Trials CbalDpioDsbip By Russ Cazier THE NORTHWEST, SEPT 1,2,3 Scott Head, in a grueling test of endurance that saw three observed trials conducted in three days in widely-separated locations in the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest, wrapped up the AMAl NATe national trials championship by winning all three events. Head, the StaT rider for Team Montesa, went into the final three events of the eight-round series tied in Championship points with Canadian Stan Bakgaard, with Don Sweet and Jack Stites also in strong contention. But Head, a 22-year-old engineering student from Placerville, California, discovered he had actually gained enough points 10 clinch the title at the end of round seven, held east of Portland at the base of Mount Hood. Then Monday, at the final event held near the Bridge of the Gods overlooking the Columbia River, with no pressure but personal pride, Head won the final event going away. Head commented about the final day," Ijustcouldn'tget in the rhythm at first. I had to ride back to camp and sit down for a while. I went back out and was all right." The three events presented a wide variety of terrain for sections. Round 6, held Saturday in Walker Valley, Washington, about 50 miles northeast of Seattle, was an endurance event, with 20 section.s spread over ,,30-mile tropical rain forest and a recent rain after a long dry spell made for a lotof water in streams that had been trickles a few days before. Round 7, held at the Base of Mount Hood about 40 miles east of Portland, consisted of 19 sections in a tight, three-mile loop with lots of logs and huge boulders and excellent spectator accessibility. Round 8 on Labor Day at Bridge of the Gods, Washington, was another spectator's dream with a short loop, but the sections were all sited in piles of loose volcanic rock, which punished errors with lots of abrasions and bruises. Brad Skreen, a Portland rider in the Championship class, commented on the diversity of each day's site. "Round 6, with the long loop may have seemed lOugh, but the loop was mostly top-gear fire roads so you could just cruise and relax between sections. Round 7 was really tight, With a lot of emphasis on complete control in the sections. This one (Bridge of the Gods) was close-in and great for the spectators, but riding the loop itseH was really tough and you couldn't rest between sections." Scott Head echoed those comments and added, "I've been following a weight training and running proI didn't et too tired but it was tough." Larry Wise ofCosmopolitan Motors (which distributes Montesa in the U.S.) was on hand to cheer on Team Montesa. ''I'm really excited about Scott's national championship," Wise said. "Montesa hasn't been doing well in World trials competition fora really artificial reason. Spain doesn't allow money to leave the country so Montesa can't sponsor 'foreign' riders of world caliber. But I think the U.S. trials championship speaks for itself and for the quality of Montesa trials bikes." In the support classes, Dean Dorcas won all three days in the High School (17 and under) class, as did Jerry Young in Senior, Wiltz Wagner (who has the distinction of having the U.S. round of the World trials named after himself) in the Super Senior and .Jack Heminway in Veteran.
