Mythen mauls
Santa Clara MX
By Stoney Ryan
SANTA CLARA, CA, AUG. 24
With a good mix of .consistent
hard riding and a little daredevil agression, Suzuki pilot
Rich Mythen took top honors
40
in the 250cc Pro class at Friday night
motocross racing at the Police Athletic
League track.
Scores of spectators and more than
150 riders watched as Mythen, who
had placed second in the first moto
behind Honda Peninsula's Phil
Douglas, rode hard in the second
moLO and came from third to first in
one exciting wild jump in the sixth
lap, passing Johnny Dauth's Honda
and Tony Richards' Kawasaki in the
air. Once in the lead, My then flew on
to a comfortable finish. Overall the
tally was Mythen, Douglas, Dauth
and Richards.
In addition to his second in the
250s, Maico pilot Douglas took the
Open Pro class with a I-I sweep,
winning the first moto handily and
earning the second. It was first-time
Expert Phil Gribnau (Yam) who
holeshot the second moto and led for
the first three laps. On lap four
Honda pilot John Wells took over
the front spot while further hack in
the pack Douglas began LO make his
move, gaining ground lap by lap. By
the seventh lap Douglas had caught
up with the leader and was pushing
hard. He finally got past Wells on the
back straightaway but was never able
to put much distance between his
rear wheel and Wells. Douglas held
on to take the checkered f1aR in a
close finish. The overall order was
Douglas, Wells and Gribna"u. .
Yamaha Support/Palo Alto Yamaha/Moto-X Fox rider Tony Flores
again swept the I25cc Pro class, estab·
lishing himself a the man to beat in
that division.

Cook dishes up
SRACMXwln
By Larry Johnson
GREELEY, CO, AUG. 24
Stacey Cook was the survivor
tonight in the fourth of a Sports
Riders Association of Colorado
five-race Supercross series here.
He won both I25cc Pro motos but not
before many thrills and spills.
When the gate dropped for moto
one, Tim Buchli and Cook drifted
wide through the first turn and Matt
Lindsey slid underneath for the lead.
Within half a lap, Cook had dropped
to fifth as Eric Sterner and Jim Mitchell snuck past. Buchli took the lead
from Lindsey, but on lap four he
went over the bars off the doubles-and
remounted fourth. On the next goround Lindsey and Buchli both
wrecked 0(( the doubles, puttinglhem
out for the night. Mitchell assumed
the lead for two laps until he suffered
a night-ending getofr. terner then
took the lead for less than a lap when
he crashed in the whoops. Cook was
next in line and he managed to stay
uprigbt for the final two laps to win
10 econds ahead of Sterner.
Sterner holeshot moto two with
Cook in tow, but on the second cir·
cuit Sterner jumped a berm and Cook
stu((ed his way underneath. Sterner
attempted desperately to reel in Cook,
but his charge led to two wrecks. He
still managed to take second, again
10 seconds. 0(( Cook's winning pace.
Mike Krtupp powered to a perfect
I-I night in the 250cc Pros. Dave
ewell grabbed the holeshot in moto
one but overshot the first turn, allowing Albert Firestine and Terry Kyle
past. Firestine was quickly dispatched
by Kyle, Randy Warren and Knupp.
These three held their positions for
four laps when they hit the doubles
three abreast. Knupp captured second
place in the daredevil move. He then
hounded Kyle in every turn trying to
out-motor him to the outside each
time. The two banged handlebars for
a whole lap before Knupp finally
made the maneuver work. Once in
the lead, he extended it to 12 seconds
at the checkers. Warren, in his effort
to stay in the chase, crashed twice but
finished third behind Kyle. Knupp
grabbed the lead early in moLO two
and cruised to an easy win over
Warren and Kyle.
