Team Spirit's YZ490fakes Aspen Six-Hour RR By Bob Thompson ASPE ,co, AUG. 26 Bruce Sass, Rusty Sharp and Dr. Tom Marquardt teamed up as Team Spirit to win the lIth annual Aspen Six-Hour Endurance Race on a YZ490-based machine. Span ored by Woody's Wheel Works and D.U.M.P., Team Spirit bested TK-7 Racing, the Motorcycle Performance Center-sponsored 500 Interceptor ridden by National stars Ricky Orlando and Roberto Pietri. On the opening lap of the event. Joe Bolte shot into the lead on the Pueblo Suzuki-Kawasaki GPz750, followed by Sass and Orlando. The early laps were run sprint race style as Sass, Bolte and Keith Marisco (also on a YZ490) traded the lead. Gradually, however, Sass pulled away and into a comfortable lead. Back in the pack after starting on thesecond row, the Team Fun RZ350 ridden by John Flieder andNorm Meyer began a gTadual drive to the front. In the final hour of the race, the GPz ridden by Bolte and Mike Petti(ord had its engine expire with only 30 minutes to go. Sass, Sharp (in his first race after retiring for a year) and Marquardt held on to win over the Orlandol Pietri effort, with Flieder and Meyer advancing to third. Results OVERALL: 1. AUG. 26 Experts Arney Wick, Ron Yamamotoand Kirk Strong KO'd Kootenai 6/8-mile flat track main events winning the 500cc, Open and 250cc Pro main events at the $3.500 twice-yearly event. Yamamoto was the lucky recipient of the $1000 payoff for winning the Open Pro main event, while Wick became the winningest rider in Kootenai Fairground's history with his fifth-in-arow 500cc win. 'Strong (Seattle Hon/Simpson/ Han) took the lead on the start of the 250cc Pro main event and led the 12rider final down the power-robbing straight, which is infamous for taking its toll on 250s. Strong had to fend off Rusty Yamamoto (Yam), Novice Clint Baskett (Han) and Idaho Juniors Kelly Perkins (Hon)and Rodney Reynolds (Kaw). Strong pulled away at a starting pace toward the later stages with Yamamoto holding steady second. Strong took the $200 to win with Yamamoto, Perkins, Reynolds and Washington's Todd Haggman in pursuit. Wick had the track wired. Randy Green drove all night and was pumped about the possibility of upsetting Wick, but instead found himself chasing Wick at the start of the 500cc Pro
