A long-time Mini champ, Burns wa back in action. Astride a barn-sLOrming four-stroker, Burns brought back vivid memories of another era, another time. Burns found stiff competition from Mike OueJlelle and Scott Freeman. All three men were Honda-mounted. The first round saw Ouellelle take control of the pack with Freeman in second with Larry Lund's Suzuki in third. A duel then ensued from wire to wire. When the big bore machines fired up for their final moto, Burns LOok charge of the pack holding Ouellette to econd and Freeman LO third LO the end. O'Mara and Mouse McCov had a showdown in the 125cc Pro nice that had fans screaming. Off the line these two drag-raced for the holeshot with McCoy centerpunching the first turn. With O'Mara in second, McCoy's Kawasaki put up a gallant fight, holding off O'Mara with a two bike lead. Terry Fowler showed everyone the stuff he was made of in a brilliantly controlled ride over a course calling for quick decision-making at every turn. Fow ler had thg unenviable task of holding Bob Kline LO fourth. O'Mara found his space high over the jumps and forced "The Mouse" to ride shot~un. When the moLO drew to a close, O'Mara had a huge lead. Mouse took a tumble and was forced to DNF. Fowler lost no time in taking over second as Mike Kell ended the round in third, holding Joe Hopkins and Kline LO fourth and fifth, respectively. When "The Mouse" met up with O'Mara on the grid for their final run, O'Mara gotthejump on him and led from wire LO wire for a dazzling pair of wins. McCoy held firm in second and kept Fowler in third. One of the tightest dices of the day took place between Fowler and fourth place racer Steven Schmitz. Chad McCraken and Clay Carroll wa~ed a hot batLie for econd, with McCraken gelling the flag ahead of Carroll. Polson returned on a 250cc aircooled Honda with a repeat performance in the250ccJuniorshoTl track main while Rocky Rivecoatand Don Folbre took second and third. Polson then turned his mount over 10 Bill Herndon for the 250cc Senior main. Terry Newman got the holeshot in the main and came out of the number twO corner in the lead, but missed a shift and was quickly passed in freight-train fa hion by Herndon, Dodd Dyson, T.]. HoughLOn and Mike Kidd. Herndon won easily and rolled back to the tarting line for the Open Senior hort track main LO again beat the field on the Polson Honda. While Bobby Shaw took the win in the 250cc TT class in his u ual form ahead of Kidd, Ed Meyer and James . Harri . he retired from the Open J unior IT and left the ballle LO LBRT teammates. Kirk Tyer won the first heat ahead of Mike Carroll with Joe Hodges in third pIa e. The cond heaL went 10 Gary Procha:ka followed by Richard Magher and Dan Leonard. Tyer took the early lead in the main and held off pre sure from Procha ka for three lap, when he lipped going through the WinslOn turn into the infield. Procha ka wa right there to take up the sla k and quickly moved out front for the win. Hodges and Carroll, meanwhile, waged Iheir own 'contesl for third. Carroll wound up ahead of Hodges on Lhe last lap. The Open Senior IT main went' right to the wire as Kidd borrowed Shaw's Northeast Suzuki-sponsored 500. Early race leader Bubba Bentley slid down in the hairpin coming out of the infield, leaving the lead to Gary Kidd, followed by Dougla Anderson and Mike. Mike got by Anderson on lap two and started pursuing Gary, who slowed, seemingly reducing hi own speed while Mike chased him. The brothers swapped the lead several times in the last two laps, with Mike ahead by six inches al the flag. Ander on. was third across the line, followed by Steve Miller. Results SHORT TRACK 50: 1.
