Thompson
thunders at ADRA
Cinder Mtn. 100
By Daryl D. Drake
FLAGSTAFF, AZ, JULY 29
Jim Thompson Jr. borro~ed
his dad's big-bore once agam,
drove down from Denver and
won his second Arizona Desert
Racing Association event this year,
the Cinder Mountain 100.
For the third running of this race,
the ADRA laid out a 38-mile course
over the truly unique surface.
The Black Cinder Hills northeast
of Flagstaff are composed of volcanic;
cinders from eruptions .in the area
back around 1066 A.D. These hard
black cinders are something like pea
gravel; they react like sand down low,
becoming ball bearings at speed.
Someplaces they're solidly packed,
other plaees they're bottomless. NASA
tested the lunar rover here.
Three hundred fifty-two riders
started, 251 finished.
. .
Thompson, riding for Compelluon
Cycle in Denver, covered four laps,
for 152 miles, in 3:34:21, garnenng
first overall and first Open Expert.
His nearest competitor, Phoenician
Bryan Hayes, was three minutes, 15
seconds back on the United Motor·
sports/Bel-Ray Yamaha 490.
Last year's winner, Jimmy Me~ns
Jr., only finished third overall, thIrd
Open Expert on a CR500 Honda this
time.
At fourth overall, Chris Chambers
was the 250cc Expert winner, 13 minutes behind Thompson. with Mike
Medwin taking the 200cc Experts
aboard a KX 125.
Two Senior Experts, Elmer Attson
and Wayne Decklever, fought it out
for the win in the three-lap classes.
Alison took it with a time of 2;56:51,
42 seconds ahead of Decklever and
nearly three minutes ahead o~ the
first Amateur, Edward ZukowskI, the
250 winner.
Over The Hill Gang member Bryon
Farnsworth beat all the Beginners
and the senior sportsmen in the twolap classes. He showed '~m how. to
ride a 200 in the mountams, edgmg
first Open Be.ginner. Samuel McRae
by over a minute.
The Mini racers ran only on a
small loop, six miles long. Ama.teurs
and Novices went seven laps, Begmner
60s and 80s went four.
Amateur SCOll Hildebrand and
Chris White ran very close with SCOll
winning by 20 seconds. Novice Brookie Jeffery had a good day as well, taking his class.
