Eddie Werren (801) leeds Rodney Berr in 125cc A Modified competition. Werren won ell three motos in the division es well es the Pro-Am cless. ahead of runner-up Thomson. Simpson/Dunlop-sponsored Kalos came back to win the 125cc B Youth di\'ision via a perfect score on his Dick Kelly-tuned Honda. Yamaha/JT/Scou-sponsored Thomson won the 85cc Modified (12-13) division with his 3-1-1 besting HiPoint/ cott/Kal-Gard's Ward. Lewis was third in a points lie with Ward. Benj ie Trask won I he first 51 cc moto but ran into problems in molO two, opening the door for Texan Jeff Dement who po led2-\-llOwinover '83 National number nine MattShue. Top hopeful Chris Allen was slowed by a broken frame in the second moto but managed fourth overall behind Trask. Jeff Oldenburg fought his way past Cone Manuel and Rod Marshall to win the opening 100cc molOS. A crash at the start of moto three left Oldenburgwith a broken clutch lever. Oldenburg struggled 10 a fifth place finish and squeaked 10 the overall win by a one-point margin over third moto winner Manuel. The Open B division kicked off the week's racing with the first of 75 mOlOS and Mark Loewen, who rides out of Tucker, Georgia's Pro-Line Honda, showed the way on lap one. However, Loewen pulled off the track on lap two. Loewen was reportedly hospitalized with a burst appendix. Pennsylvania's Chris Eugster soon moved 10 the front of the pack to win while Robert Von Smith came back from a dead last start to finish second. Smith holeshot the second moto and won aboard his Greg Waldroptuned Yamaha. Eugster worked his Kawasaki through traffic to finish second, leaving the pair tied for first going into the final molO. MOIO three saw Eugster move inio the point position on lap two. Smith started in fourth but tangled with a downed machine in the first whoops section and dropped to 17th spot. By lap three, however, Smith was in second and closing on Eugster. In the final laps Smith slipped past Eugster, but Eugster stayed glued IOSmith's rear fender and passed on the last lap for the moto win and the class championship. "Eugster played it smart," said Smith, "he waited until the last lap and passed me at the same place I Gonzales. Akin led the second molO from start 10 finish while Gonzales came back from a crash 10 pas Texan Kathy Holman on the lasl lap to finish second. . Akin reinjured her leg on the last lap of the third moto in a collision with a lapped rider, bUI held on for a clo e finish behind winner Holman and Gonzales. Holman was fir t across the line with Gonzales nippingat her heels. Afterward, Gonzales said, "I thought I had the championship. I didn't know I had 10 pass Kathy 10 win." Akin's 1-1-3 clinched the title over Gonzales' string of seconds. Asked aboutlhe future, Akin said, "( want to show those West Coast girls that I can win out there, too." • Results had passed him." Loewen's medical problems in the fir t Open B molO left his 250cc B lock starting position available and alternate Randy Crump of Alabama u ed the opportunity 10 carve out a third overall behind Michigan's David Moegle and orth Carolina's Scott McClain. Moegle won all three molO . Going into the final 250cc B SlOck molO, Moegle and Californian Willie Surratt were tied for first with a first and a second place finish each. Moto three saw Honda/Hi-Point/Gearsponsored Surratt go pa t leader Wallace Fincher for Ihe win and the crown while Moegle fought back from a crash at the start 10 finish fiflh. District 9's 250cc B champ Fincher· claimed runner-up honors via hi 33-2 score over Moegle, McClain and Crump. Surratt backed up his 250cc BSlOck win with second overall honors in 125cc B SlOck racing. Indiana's Mark Melton and Texan Chad Parker shared molO wins in 125cc B Stock and Modified divisions and came away with a class championship each. Melton's 12-1 lopped the Stock division and Parker turned in an identical score to win the Modified honors. With Gordon Bowden, the enior Men's '82 and '83 champion in retirement, top favored Barry Higgins had a clear shot at the crown. Moto one saw Higgins gas his KTM LO the win with AMA Southeastern Regional Senior champ SIeve Lc;wis following in s{'('ond. Moto two, however, saw Lewis DNF with a broken swingarm. Higgins was held to 19th after suffering a crash and subsequent rear brake problems. Kenny Hall lOok Ihe molO win followed by Oklahoma's Jim Thomas and Frank Thomas of Florida. The final molO saw contenders Hall and Jim Thomas crash inlO the DNF column while Frank Thomas posted a consistent 4-3-2 10 earn the crown. Higgins' 1-19-1 earned third over'lll behind runner-up Bob Bean. Michigan's Lisa Akin. not yet fully recovered from a broken leg she suffered four mon ths ago, returned 10 Loretta Lynn's 10 defend her.Women·s division crown.
