Races on TV I was not only pleased with the coverage you gave the Laguna Seca races a few weeks ago, I was also pleased with the coverage USA cable gave the race. I complimenl them on that race coverage. I would like to see more race coverage on cable TV. Last year I saw only rour races on TV. Photo by H....ny Ray Abnlma. Eddie's uncle says", So Erin Sayson of Boron, CA says "Of course, if Freddie Spencer keeps getting hurt, Eddie might have a good chance 10 win the World Championship." I've heard this from many involved in the sport. I thought staying on the bike was pan of being a champion. Of course when you try too hard, you have a good chance of going down and getling hun. I'm not trying to put Fast Freddie down - you don't have a # I on your plate by being a slouch. But in my eyes - now that King Kenny is gone - no one is smoother and raster than Mr. Consistent, Steady Eddie Lawson. JACK LONG Ontario, CA Your nephew now goes by another name - World Champion ... Editor. San Diego ORV a,ea After the failure of the Sycamore Canyon ORV park project in San Diego, California, many thought that was the end. The San Diego OffRoad Coalition didn't even stop there. Their new project is in the early phases but looks pretty good thus far. This project is in the Otay Mesa area, on the U.S.lMexico border. Preliminary plans call for development of the lOOO-aere site, if all required studies are positive, as a State Vehicular Recreation area. The park would have some interesting neighbors, because plans are underway for a major motorsports facility on the western boundary, a new state prison on the northwestern side, BLM land on the east and the Mexican border on the south. The site is a couple of miles east of the new border crossing and new road improvement in the area is almost completed. The park is within ear and eye shot or the Tijuana Interna· tional Airport and Brown Field on this side of the border. Preliminary planning maps call for industrial development to ocrur in this area but noLfor alleast twenty years. Some opposition has surfaced, as usual, but the Coalition expects that most can be overcome. Interestingly enough, the U.S. Border Patrol has come out in opposition lO this development. In Ii ting their concerns they cited: an increased £low of illegal aliens through the facility, use of off-road vehicles to uansportaliens within the facility, and concerns over aliens' safety while on foot in the park. The San Diego Orf·Road Coali· tion has contacted Congressman Duncan Hunter's district orfice to set up a meeting to discuss what can be done to ease the Border Patrol's con· cerns. A time schedule has not been set yet but negotiations are now underway between the County or San Diego and the State Off-Highway MOlOr Vehicle Recreation Division. The San Diego Off-Road Coalition cautions San Diego's dirt riders that no OHV project is written in SlOne. There is still a lot of work to be done and a lot of support is needed. 1£ you would like to help out, contact the coalition - you might want 10 become a member while you're at it - at 619/427-1125 after 6 p.m. LYNN BROW San Diego Off-Road Coalition Chula Vista, CA Black biker info needed Black Biker magazine has assigned me to do an article on black motorcycle dealers, mechanics and racers. My ignorance on the subject, even after a long lifetime in the trade, is colossal. I would appreciate any input, including photos, on the general subject from my multitude of dealer friends spread across this huge country. Let's hear from Ed Kretz, Ray Burke, those in Texas like the Big D, and any of the swampers in Florida. I'll send a small gift to anyone who contributes anything worthwhile that reaches print in the article. JACK MERCER c/o Box 208 Brookfield, CT 06804 In regards lO the recent letter su bmitted lO this section by Mr. Larry Jensen, I wish to renew mv stand against drugs, period. There is no justification of drugs or their use, none. Those who wish lO try 10 give drug abuse a good name are going to be surprised lO see that they are slowly becoming a very small minority. Western Cycle Supply currently sponsors two motocross riders, Shawn Para and Shawn Reis; I challenge anybody lO lOp them in the pits and ask them their reelings about drugs and racing. It takes more courage lO take a stan? ~~i".st drugs than to try lO find credlblilly In them. There is no place for drug use in any motorcycle sport. DONALD POLLARD ales Coordinator Western Cycle Supply Norwalk, CA The return of G.K. Scott Shouldn't Doug Chandler be included in the F-I points standings? He placed sixth at Loudon, 12th at Pocono and fifth at Sears Point. That should be good enough [or 22 points and make him tied for eighth along with Rueben McMurter and Nick Richichi. G.K.SCOTT Newbury Park, CA Mr. Scott consults his computer upon the arrival of each issue of Cycle News, looking for points errors. We wish he'd haul his computer to each race and print out the points immediately following the event... Editor. Published letters do not nec....rily reflect the position of Cycle News.
