PRODUCT EVALUATION Dynojet carb kits Dynojet Research sells complete kits to re-calibrate CV carburetors for most 1978-and-later street bikes over 500cc. The kit includes comprehensiv'e step-by-step instructions, main jets. needles and shim, and drill bits needed LOenlarge slide bleed holes; average price is about 88. The kits are designed to be u ed with K&N air filters, and deluxe kits including the appropriate filLers sell for about 157. Dynojet claims peak horsepower increases of 8-12% and like increases in mid-range power. The kit are designed to be u ed with either stock exhaust systems or street headers. It takes about an hour to install a Dynojet kit, following the instructions. The extra power comes from the elimination of lean carburetion conditions caused by the need to pass emissions tests. Peak horsepower increases are all well and good, but, away from the dragstrip, mid-range power is what really counts. After a Dynojet kit was installed in an otherwise-stock Suzuki GSI150, the bike felL stronRer. To test Dynojet's claims of improved response and mid-range performance, we marked off a 340-foot section of flat pavement. A rider app~oached the beginning of the section at' 1500 rpm, (about 10 mph), and turned on full throule as the bike's from wheel entered the marked section. The rider shifted at 7000 rpm and left the marked seaion in third gear.at about 90 mph. The time it took [or the Suzuki t6 accelerate through the section was measured with a stopwatch. With stock carbs, airbox and filter, th~ Suzuki accelerated through the section with a best time of 5.29 seconds and a. worst time of 5.39 seconds, along with a third run at5.35 seconds. That averages out to 5.34 seconds. With. the carb kit installed and witli K&N filters, the Suzuki accelerated. through the test section with a best" time o[ 5.1 3 seconds and worst time of 5.26 seconds, with a time of 5.19 seconds in between. The average is 5.19 seconds. So beyond the seat-of-the-pants impression of improved mid-range the kit provides, there's also about 0.15 seconds improvement in measurable acceleration time over a 340-foot distance. Dynojet kits are available from dealers or direct from Dynojet Research, .P.O.
