Gary Scott (H-D) edged Chuck Palmgren (Yam) in a near dead heat for fourth. Jimmy Ellis and Jimmy Weinert were the winners as the AMA ran a 250 and 500cc National Motocross at Hillsboro, Ohio. Ellis went I-I in the 250s 10 defeat Husky's Marty Tripes (2-2) and Kent Howerton (8-3). In the 500s Weinert banged elbows and handlebars with CZ-mounted privateer Tony DiStefano, falling when they collided, but then passing DiStefano back when DiStefano fell by himself. That win, coupled with the first-molO DNF of Suzuki's Roger DeCoster, clinched the World Championship for the 29year-old Finn. DeCoster came back to place second in the other molO behind Bengt Aberg's Bultaco, but it proved to be too late. Portland (Oregon) International Raceway was the scene of a $1000 exhibition road race. Quentin Hogan took the overall win on a 900. Kawasaki, lapping the field in the 50-mile race. Second went to Art Friedman on .a 750 Kawasaki. Cordis Brooks was the overall winner of a three-loop AMA D-37 hare scrambles held on the California desert, taking the lead when Kevin Hasten fell of£. Second overall went to A.C. Bakken on a big-bore Husky. Parachute failure caused Evel Knievel's Skycycle 10 plunge nose-first to the bottom of the Snake RiveF Canyon in an unmanned test. •, 23
