Mark Bamett came from behind to finish second overllil in the 125s and Ieed most of the 250CC main. He wun't too pleesed with his perfonnance. the entire molO in second and finished there. Honda rider Ed Arnet recovered from a poor start to finish third ahead of Ian Fiu-Gibbon and Scott Conaway. Gordon Ward and his Honda stole the holeshot for the start of the third 250cc qualifier but was quickly passed by Barnett. Yamaha rider Gary DePillo and Turner followed behind Ward. During the sixth lap, Barnen crashed when he wem too wide in a turn and clipped the hay bails. Ward took over the lead while Barnell recovered in a close third behind DePillo. But Barnett fell again less than a lap later, dropping LO fourth. Ward won the moLO while DePillo, Turner and Barnett followed. . The final 250cc qualifier produced some great racing. Burnworth grabbed the holeshot, but he swapped heavily through the whoops, handing the lead to Manley. Russ Wageman followed imo second. Brooks watched from fourth. Four laps later, Wageman squeaked by Manley for the lead. Manley, Burnworth and Brooks began a heated battle for second. The moto reached its climax when Burnworth slipped by Manley in the whoops, and a few turns later; Brooks, one of the most exciting riders to watch during the night" stuffed Manley very hard in a right-band-turn berm. The two Honda riders collided and crashed. Manley laid on top of Brooks' bike with his right leg trapped between the two. Brooks could not pick up the bike with Manley and his bike resting on top, so he lifted Manley's Honda up freeing the rider. Brooks remounted f1rst and ended up finishing third, behind winner Wageman and Burnworth. Manley recovered but finished eighth - eliminated. Semis In the 125cc classes, Turner and Manneh were the riders who took top honors giving them a trip directly to the main. Turk captured the win in the £irst 250cc semi, but the most exciting semi was the last 250cc molO, featuring a duel between Barnett and Brooks. Brooks was the first rider to exit the first turn, and he bad Barnett pass him through the second tum. However, Brooks came back and stunned Barnett when the Honda rider passed him through the whoops almost completely out of shape. On the third lap, Brooks went to the. outside through the whoops, while Barnett went LO the inside. Through the preceeding turn, Barnett made a right pivot, regaining the lead. From that point on, Barnett steadily increased his lead LO take the win and transfer LO the main. Brooks went to the LCQ. Lest Chance Qualifiers Frank led from start to finish during the I 25cc LCQ while Suzuki rider Doug Dubach Einished a close second. Brooks was by far the favorite to win the 250cc LCQ, and he did just that leading from start to finish. Pete Murray finished second. 125cc main Burnworth jumpedto an early lead for the tart of the 12-lap main in the I 25cc class, inches ahead of Glover, Smith, Manneh and Wageman. However, Burnworth's lead didn't last for very long - Glover slipped by the Suzuki pilot a few turns later. Barnett had a poor start back in eighth, but that dido't last for long, either. Two laps later, Barnett had worked up to . third after passing Smith. Glover enjoyed a comfortable lead, while Barnett tried to find a way around his teammate Burnworth. It didn't bappen umil the seventh lap when Burnworth got out of control in the whoops giving Barnett all the room he needed for second. By this poim, things began LO settle down. Glover's lead was about five seconds over Barnett which held to the checkered flag. Burnworth finished third ahead of Manneh, Wageman and Brooks. 250cc main Twenty minutes later many of the 125cc riders were at it again on 250s. This time, Barnen and his nearly stock RM250 jump imo the lead. Close behind were Wageman, Glover, Smith and Bowman. Barnett extended his lead to about three seconds over Wageman, who was busy trying to keep Glover at bay. Wageman succeeded for four laps, then Glover finally slipped by. Larry Brooks (above) put on quite a Ihow by pauing Bamett in the 260cc main. Glover (below) gives Bamett a pat on the back atter the 260cc main. All eyes were focused on the hometown favorite, Glover. Each lap, he cut Barnett's lead slimmer and slimmer. With four laps to go, Glover was breathing heavily down Barnett's back. Glover made his first move trying to duck inside of Barnett in a tight right turn, but failed. A lap later, Glover tried the same move with success - Barnen wem too wide and Glover had the lead. However, Barnett didn't give up. He stayed glued to Glover's rear fender for the remainder of the race but couldn't get by. Glover crossed the checkered flag with only a few inches to spare over Barnett for his fourth win of the nighL Third went to Wageman who managed to fend oIr hard charges by Smith. Finishing close behind Smith were Burnworth, Brooks and DePilIo. "I had a good race in the I25s," said Glover afterwards. "I had about a four- LO five-second lead over Mark, and I figured it was good enough, so I just cruised trying to save my energy for the 250s.1 didn't get quite the start I wanted in the 250s, but I worked my way up through the pack without much trouble and caught Mark.
