Corona MX win without a hitch lor Matiasevich By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, AUG. 17 Although both 125cc Intermediate motos were runaway victories at Corona Raceway, the battle for the runner-up slot ·40 was fierce and kept things exciting. DMC/Kawasaki rider JeH Matiasevich left the pack far behind as he ran away with the lead in each malO. Matiasevich shot inlO the lead at the start o[ malO one as Yamaha of Beaumont's Roy Chambers, Tony Magallenes (Han), and Yamahamounted B.]. Millspaugh tried lO keep him in sight. By the second lap Matiasevi h was a few seconds clear and pulling away, while John Flores (Yam) moved in on Chambers. Millspaugh dropped out o[ the ra e on the second lap and was done for the night, with Temple City Honda's Chris Pillow taking up his position \ not far behind Flores. With haH of the mota completed, Matiasevich was well on his way to his first win, and Flores worked his way by Chambers for second. Pillow was on the gas and closed the gap on Chambers, and for the next two laps tried to find a way' to get by. Chambers held his ground though, and on the last lap Pillow apparently gave up and backed off slightly to finish a few seconds behind the Yamaha pilot. Matiasevich won easily, with Flores a comfortable second over Chambers. The SlaTt of the second moto was a repeatohhe first; Matiasevich in first with Chambers and MagaJlenes trailing. Once again Matiasevich was in control and quickly pulled away, leaving Chambers 10 fight off the pack for second. Flores passed MagaJlenes on the second lap, and Pillow followed through in the next go'round. Magallenes wasn't about to let everyone by, and gave Pillow a tough time for a while before dropping back a bit. At mid-malO Pillow caught Flores and attempted to pass, but he hit the first set of stadium whoops a little too fast and nearly went down. After a quick recovery, Pillow went by Flores in the second whoop section, but was repassed later on the same lap. With two laps remaining the battle for second intensified as Chambers, Flores, Pillow, and Maga1lenes were all bunched together and going for the same position. Chambers and Flores managed to gain some distance by the final lap, wi th Flores sneaking by. Matiasevich crossed the line way ahead of Flores, and Chambers came in just a few bike1engths behind for third. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jimmy Williams (Yam); 2. Jason Lentz (Hon). MINI BEG 12·: 1. Cycleland ST win Taylor-made By David James CHICO, CA, AUG. 11 Ted Taylor showed the fans that he can win a 250cc Expert main with his first such victory at Moural Associate' Cycleland Speedway. Taylor got the holeshot off the line as Honda-mounted Mike Gresham, who hadn't lost in four weeks, closed in by a wheel. Along the back straight, it was Taylor, Gresham and JM] Racing/Smith Painting-sponsored, Honda-mounted Kenny Gray taking third position. For the first two laps, the trio were inches from each other. However, before Gray could begin battling [or the lead, a bad spark plug wire hauhed any chances for the Chico rider. Now the pressure was on Gresham to continue his win spree, but Taylor continued to lead with excellent blue-groove riding skills. At the halfway point, Taylor and Gresham had lots of distance on the rest of the pack, but Gresham seemed to stay at a constant distance from Taylor. When the checkered flag came out, it was Taylor winning his first main event while Gresham settled for an unfamiliar second. The surprise in the race was the I4-year-old Mark Corsetti, who had been sent back to the 3Q-yard line. but fought through traffic to [inish third. Yamaha-mounted, JMI Racing/ ABCO Busines Forms/Smith Painting-sponsored Gray wanted the money main event win as he jumped into the lead early. Before completing a full two laps, Taylor highsided coming out of turn three, leaving Corsetti a motorcycle to jump. Corsetti looked a if he wa hurt, but he quickly crawled to the infield. On the same lap in turn three, Randy Freeman bailed. Corsetti and Freeman were up walking, but Freeman couldn't return [or the re tart. The restan proved that Gray had the win in mind, but Yamaha-mounted George Cummins and Fred Waybright crashed on lapeight. With the race 80% complete, a single-file start was mandatory. Starting up front, Gray quickly pulled away from the pack. Kawasaki-mounted Joey Gresham claimed second and the race for third couldn't be determined at this point. On the last lap, Gray had the easy win and the money. Gresham finished a distant second, and the battle for third, between Yamaha riders John Grant and John Sudberry, was taken by Sudberry. II Hard-charging racing summed up the fifth round of the Pettysponsored, Continental Motosports Club-sanclioned Little Okie Series. Honda-mounted Cun Kiser shot off the line like a rocket in the first moto of the 250c Junior class, followed by Curtis Plimentel (Yam) and Greg Hunter (Han). Hunter soon took Plimental and Emery Cate Jr., came £lying up to the doubles and flew past a startled Plimentel for third. Hunter' subsequent pressure on Kiser paid off when Kiser over hot the whoops and fell to third, allowing Cate to take over econd. Going for the brass, Cate came flying over the doubles trying to do a repeat of the pass he made on Plimental, only to end up resting on a hard blanket of dirt Asa result Kiser inherited second. Ken Shirley third. On the last lap, in sight of the checker, Hunter and Kiser were trying 10 measure each other's tire size. Hunter's expanded to take the win with Kiser second. Fifty yards from the finish Shirley's chain came off, giving Plimentel third. The second malO had Kiser start in full conrrol, dominating the other riders, but he was soon confronted with the reality that Hunter wanted that same control. Moving fast and appearing to be foaming at the mouiP, Hunter held the throttle on as he dove under Kiser to take the lead. In the meantime, fly,ing Can-Am rider Scott Osgood came rushing in from nowhere to pass third-place Ed Hamilton (Kaw) before he had a chance to realize Osgood was anywhere near. The last lap appeared to be se\)'ed up for Hunter when Kiser grabbed a handful of throttle and made a desperation move to out-gas Hunter over the daring doubles and retrieve first. Hunter fought to regain his position only to have the door slammed shut as his futile attempts at passing Kiser came to a halt althe flag. Kiser was first overall, Hunter second, Osgood third. SA TA MARIA, CA, AUG. 5 American Motocross Enterprises bosted the annual Elks Benefit motocross at the new Spillway Park track. With the benefits of the ~ace all going to the Elks Children's Fund, trophies were donated by area merchants and all work was voluJ1leered. AME riders came out in force to support the event. Goleta Kawasaki rider Brad Tom put on a show for the crowd as he manhandled not only his 250cc Intermediate competitors but even bested the 250cc Pro running WiLh the Intermediates. From the drop of the first-malO gate, Toms opened a lead on the nearest Intermediate and was never really headed. But catching the slower Pro seemed like icing on the cake as Toms finished third overall in the combined go. Rick Perez put his Honda in a solid second with the CR of Henry Armenderez following third. Darin Gayton of Taft and Mike Wickersham filled in the remaining tOP slot. The second mota of the 250cc Intermediate/Pro race brought more surprises as Toms took his KX250 into first with Armenderez and Wickersham in hot pursuit, but with a few bobbles from the Pros, TomS finished first overall ahead of 250 Pro winner Mike Piyor. All in aU a fine ride [or Toms and a fitting climax to the day's racing. Second went to Arrnenderez on a 3-2 score with GaylOn, Perez and· Wickersham taking third- through fifth-place trophies. In minicyc1e action, Jeff Orth showed the way in both motos of the Mini Junior race but had an unfortunate incident in molO one, dropping back to eighth then pulling back to fourth by the checkers to compile a 4-1 score good enough for second overall. The only rider capable of hanging with Onh was Randy Moody aboard his Yamaha. Moody stuck to Orth like glue as the two motored away from the field, looking every bit like Intermediates instead of Juniors. But in the second mota Moody could not quite match Orth's
