Mike Healey entered three cia.... but went home with one win - in the 1OSee Expert cl.... Poor start. hampered hi. other effort•. 18 ever won the molO between the four. would take the championship. Kawasaki-mounted ScOll Chesser, who went into the moto with 16 points. led off the start followed by Jackson, Yamaha-mounted Ward Bassen. Kawasaki rider Jason Upshaw, Kiedrowski and Healey. Only eight seconds separated the first six riders. Hicks' and Moore's chances at taking the win ended in the first turn. Hicks' Yamaha seized and Moore plowed right into him knocking the Kawasaki pilot out of contention. Meanwhile, Healey was busy passing his competitors one at a time, while his main concern, Tichenor. was far back in the pack. With three laps remaining, Healey found his way into second. over five seconds behind Chesser. In one lap. Healey chopped two seconds off, then on the following lap. the Suzuki star passed Chesser during the long back straightaway for the lead. A half lap later, Healey crossed the checkers II seconds ahead of Chesser. Healey easily captured the overall. while Vince DeVane, on a Yamaha who finished seventh in that molO, lOok second. Kiedrwoski sellled for third ahead of Upshaw and Tichenor. Kawasaki rider Ed Warren had his work cut out for him in the 125cc ~t?Ck Expert class. He had to face such competitors as Honda's Mike Fisher and Brooks, Kawasaki's Todd Campbell and local Oklahoma resident Dennis Daft. Warren had the advantage going into the final race with three points; next was Daft with six. Both Fisher and Brooks had poor outings the day before and were nearly out of championship contention. Nevertheless. Brooks wanted lo prove he was the fastest but Campbell wanted to prove he was. When the gate dropped. it was Campbell and Brooks side-byside heading into the first turn. Halfway into the first lap, Campbell settled into the number one position ahead of Brooks, Rodney Barr. Frank Lamp, Carroll Richardson and Keith Turpin. Fisher was way back in the pack, while Daft took a hard header in the first turn and had to retire from the race, shaken. Warren was seventh. By the second lap, Campbell. Brooks and Barr started lo pull away from the rest of the pack in a dogfight that was to be one of the most exciling of the day. The biggest lead Campbell held over Brooks was ItwO seconds. However. each lap Brooks knocked fractions of a second of thal distance, while Barr followed within inches of Brooks. After rap five. Brooks stuffed his front wheel underneath Campbell's Kawasaki in every turn, but Brooks couldn't take too much of Rodney Barr lead. Jeff Gla•• (173), Ed Gie..lman (531) and Billy Abel in the 250cc Pro cia••. Barr fini.hed third overall. a chance, because Barr was right there waiting for the slightest bobble by Brooks lo squeeze by. Exiting a right turn before a long straight, Brooks went wide and took a haLf-bikelength lead over Campbell, but Campbell's Kawasaki was a shade faster than Brooks' Honda down the straight, so the lead went back to Campbell. On the next lap, at the same place, Brooks again slipped into the lead and managed to hold on until the following left sweeping turn where Campbell dove inside oj Brooks and took the top spot back once again. With one lap to go, Brooks could not find a way around the stubborn Kawasaki pilot until two turns from the checkered. Heading into a tight ess section, Brooks went for it by holding the thronle wide open inlO the first turn and stuffed Campbell. Brooks had the bener line into the next turn and held on to cross the finish line - only 50 feet away - first. Throughout the ballle. Barr was always in the hunt and lOok a well-deserved third. However. Warren's fifth-place finish gave him more than enough for the championship. Second through fifth overalls went to Campbell, Carroll Richardson, Fisher and Turpin. Fisher and Campbell trailed in ninth, 10th and 11 tho By the end of lap one, Barr stayed glued lo Manneh's rear fender and took over the lead by the end of the second round after Manneh bobbled in the back section of the track. Warren worked his way into third followed by Richardson and Daft. After completing two more laps. Manneh was desperately searching for a way around Barr. but Barr stayed tough. However. Manneh found a fast line in the back straight and inched his way around Barr. At the same time, Warren also slipped around Barr, then two laps later. Barr had the lead after Manneh crashed. Manneh eventually dropped back to fourth behind Warren. Barr and Richardson. Warren stretched his 'lead lo over seven seconds by the time he crossed the finish line. However, Barr edged Warren by one pointlO capture the overall ahead of Richardson, Fisher and Brooks. Brooks was the one to beat in the 250cc Pro class. because he had the low-score advantage going into the final race Sunday over Barr by one point. As the pack exited the first turn at the start it was Daft out in front. Pursuing were Honda-mounted
