Dave Busby (38) leads Don Greene (20). Alan Labrosse (27) and Tracy DeMuro in F-2. (Below) John Williams topped BoTT again. But Sears Point is a difficult track, and where you are one lap isn't necessarily where you'll be able to stay. Busby's bike lost part of one silencer, the stingerfalling off in the esses. A corner worker ran out to retrieve it, grabbing it with a bare hand and tossing it in the air as he discovered it was blazing hot. And with the loss of that piece of pipe, Busby's bike slowed down, and Greene was past and gone. Greene turned his fastest lap then - 1:47 and wouldn't be challenged for the lead again. Labrosse gained and passed Busby; but Labrosse would later say that he found the pace needed to stay ahead of Busby - 1:48s - too frantic, the tankslappers too constant on the bumpy course. Not wanting to crash - like he did in the Sears Point Proam a few months ago - Labrosse backed it down. Meanwhile, DeMuro was gaining; he passed Labrosse and set out after Busby. Behind them, Glover passed Sadowski - he, too found the pace too hot, he would explain later. and settled down, concentrating on his riding and his own pace instead of Sadowski. That concentration would bring Glover and Barry Elliot's Spondon-framed Yamaha past Sadowski again before the finish, and it would stick. DeMuro passed Busby at the end; Busby's last chance to repass came in turn seven on the last lap, but Busby's foot slipped off a footpeg, he bobbled, and the opportunity was lost. Greene won. DeMuro was second, Busby third, Labrosse fourth and Glover fifth. Honda's Sam McDonald retired with bike trouble while running about eighth. Results 1 ,. Don Green (Yam); 2. Tracy DeMuro (Vam); 3. IoTT --- Williams, Church in Sunday picnic By Dale Brown SONOMA. CA, AUG. 19 John Williams, riding Dale Newton's 750 TTl Ducati, and Gene Church, on the Harley Owners Group "Lucifer's Hammer," were the class of the field in the Battle of the Twins. Together the two put more than 40 seconds on everybody else before the race was red-flagged on the 10th lap because of a crash. Williams had up to eight seconds on Church, but the latter showed the potential to catch right up. The race was scheduled for 161aps, although Harry Klinzmann didn't make even one after breaking the throttle cable of his GP-class Krauser BMW on the warm-up lap. Off the start it was a familiar sight: Jimmy Adamo leading the field on Reno Leoni's Cagiva. Church was second, Williams third. Before the first lap was into the books Williams gave Church a view of his exhaust pipes in turn 10 and made the pass stick. Behind them, but already out of immediate striking distance, Ducati-mounted Dale Alexander and Moto-Guzzi pilot Frank Mazur were having at it for fourth. ~\'~lliap,1~, w99/la.s rt;coJd¢~oTT wins on Newton Ducatis at Laguna Sea this year and Seattle last year, made his move for another by passing Adamo on the third lap. The front-running duo had a bit of space over Church, and then it was bigtime real estate back to the Alexander/Mazur duel for fourth. Behind the front runners there was anion aplenty, although it was wfficult to track. The hot riders from the second-wave start (Li~htwei~htModified and Stock) were overtaking the lower riders from the first wave (GP and Heavyweight Modified) at such a rate it was like keeping lap charts for the annual bull stampede in Paloma, Spain. By the fifth lap Church had passed Adamo and by the sixth lap it was apparent that Adamo was having mechanical troubles, he had dropped well back of the leading duo, with a slipping clutch. By lap seven Williams, who calls Sears Point his home track, had six seconds on Church. Adamo was third, with Mawr fourth on the Rennsport M-G. Alexander had dropped out of the race with a sour bike, so fifth belonged to Devin Battley and his San Jose BMW. On the next two laps it appeared that Church, riding the Don Tilleytuned, XRIOOO-based racer, was beginning to make up time on Williams. During the same period it was definitely clear that Adamo was having problems as Battley first passed Mazur, and then they both overtook the Cagiva rider. On the ninth lap a BMW rider in the Stock class threw it away in turn three, although he walked away from the crash. Relying on a caB for the ambulance from corner workers, officials red-flagged the race. After the red flag quieted the action, the rider in question put his helmet back on, started his bike and rode back to the pits. When the red flag flew, Williams and Ch urch had more than 40 seconds on the closest machine. Battley was it, followed by Mazur and Adamo. Central California rider Simon Smith topped the Heavyweight Modified class on a Ducati, besting Rick Weber. In the Lightweight class, Fred Eikers took the win on a Norton. He eventuallv worked UP to sixth overall. Moto-Guzzi 'gasser Robert Reinen Jr. turned in a tough ride. By far the fastest in the Stock class, Reinen advanced to 11th. Points battlers Brent Ross (Yam) and Will Roeder (H-D) finished 2-3 to keep their battle alive. Results GP; 1. John Willioms (Due); 2. Gene Church (HOI; 3. Devin Bettley (BMW); 4. Lind/Hart break away By Dale Brown SONOMA, CA, AUG. 19 Sears Point officials might just as well have mailed the firstplace Sidecar money and trophy to Seattle, Washington. That's how dominant the Yamaha of Bruce Lindand]ack Hart was in the 10-lap, 25-mile Sidecar final. Lind/Hart did not lead all the way. The Dean Cleeton/Brian Eng chair Jed through the firSt five corners or so before the Seattleites put their Hart RjlFjJ;lgl,~~s. fH e~/Li';l? c- ing-sponsored rig into first. By the end of the first lap Lind! Hart had opened up four seconds on Cleeton/Eng, with points leaders Ian Fillery and Brian Ceelen coming up to challenge for second. The challenge was maintained through lap three, then made successful on the fourth tour of the circuit,. By the midway point Lind/Hart had 14 seconds over Fillery/C1eeten, and the top two positions were set to the flag. CleetonlEng lost third place in a scary way on the final lap when the passenger missed a hand hold in turn eigh t and the rig crashed hard. There were no major injuries reported, but Cleeton was said to have suffered a bloody nose. That left third to the Mark Bevans/ Eric Iseman chair, with fourth going to Leon Van Orsdale and Bernie Thomas. Cleeton/Eng were credited with fifth, one up on Pete' Essaff and Frank Mazur, who were in and out of the pits with problems and rode the last half of the race holding the electrical connection to the fuel pump in place with their hands. ''I'm still recovering from a broken collarbone and wasn't sure ifI would last 10 laps racing with someone," said Lind. "So the plan was to go out and hammer it for six laps and then coast the rest of the way. It worked out, although we were getting a little slack towards the end." Results FINAL: 1. SdIooI C".IIea6' Scoular super By Dale Brown SONOMA, CA, AUG. 18 New Zealand's Richard Scoular mastered the lO-lap, 25mile California Superbike School Challenge taking one of 18 identical Kawasaki GPz550s and running away from the pack with it. Likewise Dave Sadowski, another rider known more for success at the club level, got second position early and held it to the finish. Once ScouJar and Sadowski set up their 1-2 operation (before the end of lap one), the best racing was for third, a three-way battle between David Busby, Dave Emde and Chris Steward. Busby and Emde swapped third around several times before the halfway point, with Steward hanging right in there. At this point in the race Scoular had five seconds on Sadowski, who had a similar margin on the Busby/Emde/Steward affair. On the seventh lap the battle for third became a two-rider scenario when Steward ran off the track in turn seven, although he wd not lose a position. When they took the white flag Busby was holwng third. In one of the more exiciting finishes of the day, however, Emde went around Busby going to the checkered flag to just nip him for the show spot. Well behind Steward, Tracy DeMuro finished sixth ahead of Ricky Orlando and Pat Hernon. The race paid a $2500 purse; Scoular won $700. • Results FINAL: 1. Richerd Seouler (Kew); 2.
