On the next-to-Iast lap Lawson carried out his dress rehearsal for the finish. He out-braked Roche and although the Honda was back in front again as the pair started their last lap, he knew that it was possible. The corner is effectively hidden from mostof the circuit by aclumpof trees, so most of the spectators just saw Lawson and Roche diving, neckand-neck, into the corner. Every eye was locked onto the end of the trees to see who it was who had won the duel and would therefore win the race. What they saw first was Day-Glo red and white and Eddie Lawson on his way to his fourth GP win and his first World Championship. Three seconds behind the new champ, having gone off the track and come back on again, was Roche. Third, over 16 seconds behind and almost unnoticed in the excitement, was Wayne Gardner. Describing the action in the corner afterwards, Lawson said, "I just left everything as late as possible and went in praying. When Raymond came past me halfway into the corner I just smiled to my elf, because I knew that there wa no way anyone could go past there and stay on the track." The post-race press conference was held in the Anderstorp clubhouse, the only one in GP racing which has a swimming pool, and the OUlcome was never in doubL. Sitting quietly in the commentary box in his dripping leathers, hejoked with the disc-jockey who presents the Sunday afternoon sports and music program from London. The BBC, accustomed to the prima donnas of Formula I car racing, cannot believe a soaked World Champion who will talk to them before he goes off to his mOLOrhome to change.
