Aseltine smoked his way around Hannegan Speedway's quarter-mile nat track to beat AMA junior speedster Brian McGonigal. But Aseltine feU shoTt in the 250cc Pro main, as he was trounched by National number 59 Kirk Strong. Randy Green won the fastest heat race on his ND/Pro-FueIlBel-Ray/ Simpson/American Honda 600 in Open Pro preliminaries to beat a surprising Aseltine. The main was another story - Green grabbed the lead after many chaotic false starts and motored into his own race while McGonigal, Aseltine (H-D), Chris Fitzhugh (Seattle Honda), Roose and Californian Dan McDonnell (Hon) followed tbe Honda pilot. Green met the hand of doom and his evening ended with a sputter which put Aseltine into the lead. But McGonigal was right there to snap the lead away and make the order Fitzhugh, McDonnell and Mike Kearney (Yam 500) in the top five. Aseltine trailed McGonigal until the last lap when the British Columbia rider forced his way past McGonigal and Fitzhugh to top the main and beat two of the fastest juniors in the west. Terry Wahl (C-A) was fourth and Novice A.j. Eschwig (Hon), fifth. Strong topped his heat race on the Seattle Hon/Simpson-sponsored Honda 250 water-pumper and was right back in command at the start of the main event. Not making things easy for Strong early in the race were McGonigal (Yam), Eschwig (Hon), Aseltine (Yam) and TT series opener winner Novice Mark IlIian (Hon). Strong stormed into the lead and never looked back, but certainly felt the heat of Aseltine and McGonigal, who were battling for second. Late in the race, Aseline got the nod for second and Strong went on to win. McGonigal rode to third ahead of Novices Illian and Eschwig. Strong added the trophy dash to his domination to make a sweep of the 250cc class. Results OPEN PRO-AM: 1. SIeve AIeIline (H-D); 2. Briln McGonigel (Rlx); 3. Chris Filzhugh (Hon); 4. Curtis ASPEN, CO, JULY 29 TZ Yamaha pilots Aaron Turner and Phillip Johnson had at it in Formula Two in one of the highlights of the Mountain Roadracing Association's road race at Woody Creek Raceway. Much of the drama occurred before the race when johnson had to completely rebuild his G-model motor. With the aid of Turner's tuner, johnson finished the task just seco(lds before the warm-up lap. With just one lap on the new motor johnson was gridded on the last row, but he put a wild charge through the pack to get Turner in his sights. just when he caught up to Turner, johnson's transmission began to jump out of gear, but still he lowered the F-2 track record as he finished second a few bikelengths back of Turner. Open Superbike provided one of the most exciting races as Dr. Dave Kiefer showed good riding and large amounts of horsepowerfrom his 1100 Kawasaki. En route to the win Kiefer set a new track record of I:04.8. Leading the pursuit of Kiefer was Ray Bolte, who ended up the day with an impressive three wins and two seconds. Bob Burkler finished third after shadowing Bolte much or the way. Results BEG: 1. J.T. Vucker; 2. Ray Poronsky; 3, Mark Miller. 450 PROD: ,. Greg Smith; 2. John Hoppersted; 3. Greg Smilh; As 1-20 Supercross hosted its first-ever Sunday races, Kawasaki-mounted Billy Richard from New Iberia, Louisiana•. immediately involved himself in h,auling off I25cc Intermediate honors. Richard roasted the 125cc Experts as well, in a combined field, when he took the checkered ahead of Stuart McAvoy and Matt Alexander jr. in the first moto. Mexico's Yamaha-saddled Chava Sanchez was third in class behind Ricbard and Honda rider johnny Adams. Richard led the second-moLO start. Suzuki-suited McAvoy was pressing Richard hard; Alexander got off third ahead of Adams and Sanchez. McAvoy took control on lap two and charged to the checkers. Overall runner-up Richard toted top Intermediate laurels. Alexander, Adams and Sanchez rounded the first five. Youngsville, Louisiana's Buster Graham led on all laps of both 125cc Novice motos, crushing the class on his Kawasaki mount. Kawasaki-carried Scott Brodnax ran in second position all the way in the first encounter. Kevin Williams on a Honda held third on lap one but was overhauled by Darrell Heine on the second click and the die was cast. Greg Denison outdueled fellow Honda rider Billy Don Edwards for fifth. Graham again grooved the track as moto two moved into action. Hondahandling Chris Pritchett powered into second spot, with Williams, Hondaholstered Michael Wallace, Heine and Brodnax rounding behind. Most of the moto was locked on heavy combat wi th Heine and Brodnax in a battle for fourth. Graham garnered the gold when the flag fell. Williams went 4-2 for second overall. Christian, Schlag top Sand ~i" MX By Jim Bowman BRENTWOOD, CA, JULY 27 Cycle Gear/Richmond Yamaha-sponsored Craig Christian won the 250cc and 125cc Pro monies at Sand Hill Ranch MX tonight, while Contra Costa Honda's joey Schlag won the Open Pro class after some very good racing action. The combined 250 Pro/Open Pro race was the most exci ting race of the night as Honda CR250 pilot George Hopper (MalotI's Honda of Manteca) pused LOward the 100% effort mark while trying LO catch Schlag on the Open class mount. Christian started a distance back from the leaders and remained in third, while Hopper and Schlag traded places several times in a: series of about five turns. Schlag finally pulled away to build a little bit of a cushion by the checkers, finishing ahead of Hopper, Christian, Rick My then and Concord Yamaha/Malcom Smith-sponsored jerry Brandt. The second moto was just as exciting as Christian claimed the holeshot with Schlag and Hopper bauling close behind. Christian would pull away on his Yamaha, only to be caught by the pair on the Hondas, and then Christian would pull away again. The Schlag/Hopper duel continued until lap eight when Hopper buried his bike in a berm and ended
