TEri YEARS AGO Yamaha's Kenny Roberts notched his third AMA Grand National Championship eries win of the season by taking the Santa Fe Short Track National. Yamaha riders Mike Gerald and John Hate1ey finished 23, with Hateley passing Harley-Davidson's Gary Scott on a four-s~oke Sprint-based machine in the last turn. Mike Kidd had his season end early when he crashed and broke his leg in two places. Delta, Ohio, was the site of an AMA 250/500cc National Motocross. In the smaller class, Can-Am's Jimmy Ellis. came from behind to win the first moto, then had the second moto dropped in his lap when Marty Tripes' Husky blew while he was leading. Second overall went to Yamaha's Tim Hart with a pair of thirds. Another Jim, Kawasaki's Jim Weinert, won the 500cc class with a pair . of runner-up finishes. Mike Hanwig, riding a Husky after departing from the Yamaha team, won the first moto only to slide out in the second and drop to fifth, till good for second overall. Maico rider Bryar Holcomb turned in a 6-1 score for third. Phil Read and MV Agusta secured the 500cc World Road Racing Championship with a win in Imatra, Finland. Read took the win over teammate Gianfranco Ronera, and with title contender Giacomo Agostini missing the race as a result of injury, it was lillIe contest. Aussie John Dodds won the 350cc class on a Yamaha, while Harley-Davidson's Walter Villa won the 250cc event. STORM HITS CANDE4LERSI Thousands Of dollars swept away. The Swedish duo of Anders Michanek and Soren Sjosten won the World Best Paris Speedway Championship in England, with the favored English team of Peter CoUins and Dave Jessup finished a disappoiming fourth. Bob Balentine (Hus) won a Desert Racing Association hare and hound in Lucerne VaJley, California, topping fellow Husky pilot ~.c. Ballen. Third overall went to first 250cc Expert, Bultaco pilot Jim Brown. Yamaha rider Mike Tidwell was a double winner at a Corona, California, short track. Eddie Lawson finished as runner-up to Tidwell in the I25cc Expert class; in the 250cc Experts it was Steve Fortune in second. Ray Huff and Gene Arnaiz finished 1-2 in a Suzuki bailIe for supremacy of the 250cc Expert class at a scrambles event held in Lodi, California. In the same event, Fred Merkel (Hon) won the 80cc Expert class and Chris Carr (M-V) took the Pee Wee crown. The American World Trophy Team for the International Six Days Trial was announced by the AMA. The team, all Penton-mounted, consisted of Jack Penton, Carl Cranke, Joe Barker, Tom Penton, Paul Danik and Dane Leimbach.
