Water-cooled 500cc motocrossers have been around Europe for about four or five years. The first ever watercrosser was raced by Hakan Carlqvist in 1981 in some pre-season internationals, bu t the Yamaha seized so often that the factory resorted to air-cooled machinery for the season. Honda first turned up with a watercooled machine in late March, 1983, in Europe, with Malherbe, Noyce and Thorpe all riding them. Whether the CR500RF takes over from the RE as the winningest bike in Australian motocross depends on Honda's 1985 CR line Honda's entire 1985 CR lineup - lhe CR500R, CR250R, CR125R and CR80R - fealure walercooling, new frames with removable rear sections, and full-floating rear brakes with magnesium backing plates. The CR500R has a completely new 491cc engine. The Pro-Link rear suspension has a new shock and a new linkage for more wheel travel. The CR250R has new porting to increase horsepower and torque. The ATAC sub-chamber built what the opposition comes up with in machinery and riders for the upcoming season. Certainly Leisk showed he intendS to keep on winning - at the bike's debut at the Traralgon Motor Cycle Club's July 8 meeting, he took the winner's share of the $3000 prize.money by leading home Kawasaki Australia's Trevor Williams, and Suzuki's Ricky Murphy in each of the day's fourraces. Leisk said the bike felt- no heavier than the RE, and was easy enough to ride. Although it was bulkier with the radiators, he was pleased with it. Leisk said the RF pulled about one bikelength in third gear over an RE. Neither Leisk nor Benn ",ould hazard a guess on when the production bike was due in numbers, or how much it would cost. • into the exhaust system - Honda's method of increasing midrange power without hindering . high-rpm performance - has been changed to further increase mid-range power. The CRl25R has a new engine with magnesium crankcases and new porting specifications to improve horsepower and torque. Like the CR250R, theCRl25R has changes to the ATAC system. AndliitetheCR500R,theCRl25R has a new rear shock and linkages. The CR80R has new porting and a new exhaust system incl uding revised expansion chamber dimensions and recalibration of the ATAC system. The CR80R also has a new rear shock and new suspension linkages. Australian-issue CR500 is one of several Honda's trying out for '85. Note lack of ATAC system, which CR250 and 125 have. Team Hammer wouldn't start a race without us. We're CAM2 Racing Gasoline and we've been on board every time Team Hammer has won In 1984. That's saying something, since Team Hammer is dominating the Dunlop/WERA National Endurance Series, winning five events In a row, including the Nelson Ledges 24-hour, July 28-29, and looking to win the Championship as they did In 1983. How does CAM2 help? Because even the best premium pump'grade gasolln" fail to provide the performance and protection of CAM2 Racing Gasoline. CAM2 is blended precisely under laboratory conditions and has components developed for beUervapori~tionand evaporation, for maximum performance. Find out what Team Hammer already knows.
