FonnuiaTwo McDonald scores comefrom-behind • win LONG POND, PA, AUG. 4 "We've gotten a lot of almosts this year, but this is the first time we're in the middle on the victory stand," and obviously ecstatic Sam McDonald said after he gave Honda their first Formula Two victory of the year on the RS250_ The McDonald Racing/HRC/Moto-X Fox-sponsored rider was challenged most of the way though, with Don Greene taking second and John WilIiams third_ Series point leader Chris Steward seized and Joey Sommers, who had held second in the series fell in turn one, breaking his femur and taking a trip to the Wilkes-Barre Hospital. Stew· ard still leads with 64 points, Greene moves into second with 63, and Sommers is third with 56. Canada's Alan Labrosse won the first and faster heat with Greene second and Chris Steward third. McDonald dropped out of the heat and had to start from the hack of the pack for the final. Sommers won the second heat ahead of Williams and Santiago Londono. Self-sponsored Greene got the holeshot with Williams and Sommers close behind along with Doug Libby and Steward. McDonald was on the move and in the top five by the third lap. .By the fifth he was in the lead wi th Sommers and Greene under a blanket in second and Williams within striking distance. A few laps later and Sommers' race was over in the first turn. Don Greene explains: "We were side by side going into turn one and he held it on for about 50 yards longer than me and just lost the front end." He was in second at the time and McDonald was instantly aware of his crash. "1 was getting plus one from my pit crew and then all of a sudden it was plus seven," he said. Past the halfway point the race turned into something of a parade with McDonald leading Greene, Williams, Libby, and Londono. The positions wouldn't change and Honda had its first win. "It feels great. My brother Phil has been working on the bike to get it going and it's finally paid off." Greene was just a~ pumped in second and when asked the stock question by the track announcer about his Yamaha said, "It obviously seems to run well," adding that it was the first time this year that there had been three different brands in the winner's circle. . The third was the ROlaX of Williams. "I drove 3,000 miles to get here and I got in last night," the Emery; ville, California, resident said. "I only got about four hours sleep and I really felt it. My energy started go to on about the fifth lap." Results 15-LAP FORMULA TWO: 1. Sem McDonald (Hon); 2. Don Greene (Yam); 3. John Williams (Rotl; 4. Douglas Libby (Yam); 5. Santiago Londono (Yam); 6. Battle 01 the Twins Adamo's twin the fastest LONG POND, PA, AUG. 4 There were no heat races for the Battle of the Twins racers, just an all-out assault with all four classes on the track at once. The overall and GP class winner was Jimmy Adamo on the Team Leoni Pan tab-based Cagiva. Gene Church was the winner ora race-long battle with Dave Roper for second, but almost lost it with a faulty oil seal on his shifter dripping oil onto the right side of his tire making for some interesting moments on the Harley Owner's Group/Tilley H-D entry. The BMW duo of Harry Klinzmann on the Krauser machine and Devin Battley on the ex-David Emde SureFire B bike took fourth and fifth res pecti vel y. Trying to keep track of all of the different classes in the BoTT is only slightly more difficult than changing steering head bearings with mittens on. Adamo was clearly the class of his class, establishing an early lead and never relinquishing it. "If he finishes, he wins," a mechanic for a competing team said, and that's how it went. The ease with which he won was apparently deceiving. "It was sliding bad," Adamo told Reno Leoni as he came into winner's circle. "The' rear especially." Leoni was using a monstrous 16-inch rear Michelin on the back which wasn't available to the public. "So far we haven't had good luck and I'm hoping that that's all changed. At the beginning of the race I just tried to get a lead and then toward the end I was just looking for a glass of water," Adamo said jokingly. In the Heavyweigh.t Modified class, Bert Stuckert, on a BMW, inherited the lead after leader Dave McClure dropped out on the fifth lap when the throttle cable came out of his Harley's carburetor. Stuckert beat Ed Labelle and George Vincensi for the class win. The Lightweight Modified win went to Roger Sears on a Ducati and in the Stock class Will Roede.r put his foot down, literally, in most very corner, and styled to the class win on a Harley. • Results GP: 1.
