Randy Mamola (Hon) edged Eddie Lawson (Yam) by two seconds to win the August 5 British CP at Silverstone and that means Lawson will have to wait at least one more week -until the Swedish CP August 12 for another chance to clinch the title. Ron Haslam (Hon) finished third ahead of Virginio Ferrari (Yam) and Barry Sheene (Suz). Lawson has the point lead over Mamola, 119 points to 96, with injured Freddie Spencer, who has decided to sit out the rest of the series, in third at 87. Should Mamola win the Swedish CP, all Lawson has to do to clinch the title is to finish in the top four. One incident of note at Silverstone: Mamola struck a rabbit (yes, a rabbit) during the race which bounced up into the air and struck Lawson's knee. Neither rider was injured in the incident, but the rabbit died. Dunlop unveiled a prototype paddle MX tire at the Foxboro Supercross. and according to Dunlop's Rick Bogdan, the tire is well within the limits of rules set up by Insport. Ricky Johnson used the tire at Foxboro and finished second. while Jeff Ward, Billy Ules and Mark Barnett also used it. The large center knob or "paddle" is designed for maximum traction under sandy conditions, with conventional knobs molded on the sides to aid cornering. Randy Goss raced both the Springfield Mile Nationals with this larger oil cooler mounted on his factory Harley-Davidson XR750. According to Goss. tuner Brant Thompson chose this mounting position to get the cooler in the direct flow of air. Christian Sarron (Vam) won the British 260cc GP, and continues to lead the title chase with 97 points to Manfred Herweh's 70. Neither Wayne Rainey nor Alan Carter finished in the top 10. Angel Nieto (Gar) copped his sixth win of the ....on in the British 125cc GP. Thieves broke into a Hertz/Penske rental truck being used by Team Honda to transport bikes and equipment to the Pocono Camel Pro Series road race. The nighttime incident in Columbus, Ohio, saw Phil McDonald lose his toolbox, suitcase and hang-up bag of clothes; all h is tuning notes £rom the last three years; a used XR80 Honda: and Sam McDonald's spare VF750F Superbike engine. Vear-to-date registrations increased 8.5%forthe Milwaukee brand. The gap between Harley-Davidson and Honda was 42.5% in 1983, but has been narrowed to 26.9%. More details available next week. Former AMA motocross and hillclimb manager Carroll Chandler moved to Spring, Texas, to work as the track manager for MX promoter Jerry Surber in Conroe, Texas. "I'm working with the local riders and sponsors to build a good image for MX in the area," said Chandler. "It's a 'no pressure' job. We've also been putting a lot of time into getting the treck at Lake Whitney Cycle Park back into shape." Negotiations are underway for a yeararound supercross racing program at Bakersfield, California's Mesa Marin Speedway. The races have been run on a regular basis since April, boasting a $2000 purse at each event. according to promoter Ward Robinson. "There was no choice but to cancel," said Robinson. "Initially, Insport scheduled their Sacramento Supercross on September 29 which was very bad for us. Then the AMA got them to change their date to September 22, one week earlier. That's even worse, because all the riders would be in California to ride in the round. Who would want to make a 3,ooo-mile trip back for this event? I'm very disappointed. The riders have lost a good payday and the event had the potential to grow toa$lOO,ooo purse wihin a few years £rom the $40,000 we were offering this year." Jacky Vimond (Vam) won both motos in the August 5 250cc MX GP in Rothenthurm. Switzerland, topping Arno Drechsel (KTM) and point leader Heinz Klnigadner. By JQhn Ulrich Contrary to what we reported in our July 11 issue, Hugh Parker wa. the winner of the 125cc Junior class at the Mammoth Mountain Motocross, not Curt Trimble. The WERAIDunlop Endurance Road Racing Series 24-hour event at Nelson Ledges featured the reflective 3M tape to mark corners that was first used during the 24-hour event at Willow Springs run last June in southern California. Although the tape costs 500 per race, the WERA says it will continue to use the material. "The extra cost of providing the tape is oHset by the safety advantages and the acceptability of it to the racers," said WERA Director of Operations Dr. Bill Perkinson, adding, "Our riders felt less intimidated by the track at night and therefore more able to concentrate on the race." Former 500cc World Motocross Champion Bred Lackey will host a two-dey motocross camp for Mini riders August 18-19 at Sand Hill Ranch in Brentwood, California, near the Bay Area. The Invitational Trophy America MX, set for September 30 at New Berlin, New York's Unadilla Valley Sports Center, has been caJ;lcelled The phone calls started last week. They were angry phone calls. Indignant voices, strutting with self-importance and outrage. The subject? The piece I wrote on the Southern California Professional Bench Racer's Association and their ill-£ated ride from Los Angeles to Monterey for the Laguna Seca road races. The story detailed several crashes on the ride. naming names and bikes. The callers were not among the crashees. They were among the nameless others, up in arms. Not because the ride - perhaps 50 riders blasting up a public highway as fasl as they could - was dangerous. Not because one or two or three of the participants could easily end up underneath a bus, the subject of screaming headlines in the national press, "Three magazine editors killed in street race." Not beca use of the alarm the sight of four dozen riders at speed could spread among the populace. BUI because they were afraid the story would make it impossible for them to borrow bikes £rom Kawasaki for next year's ride.
