TEri YEARS AGO Kenny Roberts and his Yamaha led start to finish in the 75-mile Laguna Seca Road Race National, winning easily over Kawasaki's Yvon .DuHamei and his own teammate, Gene Romero. In the 250cc Junior/Expert Combined event, Roberts was on top of his game as well, beating Harley-Davidson's Gary Scott by 12 seconds and lapping all but the top four. Pat Hennen bested Larry Bleil in a battle of Yamahas in the Junior race, and 'Skip AksIand was top Novice. Wes Cooley took a Yamaha and used iuo win the Lightweight Production event, while DuHamel won the Heavyweight Production class on a big Yoshimura Kawasaki. Czechoslovakia's ldenek Ve1ky wrapped up the Inter-AMA Motocross Series title with a win in the final round at Zoar Motocross Park in Springfield, New York. Velky won the first moto over eventual runnerup Gary Semics (Hus) and third-placer Kent Howerton (Hus). Those three finished in the same order in the second moto, but behind Kawasaki's Jim Weinert and Bultaco's Jim Porn- eroy, both of whom DNF the first moto.. . Running along with the Inter-AMA race was the American round of the FIM 12.5cc World Cup. Only two European riders· entered, so it was an American sweep of the top places. Yamaha teamster Tim Hart won with a 1-2 tally, followed by Honda riders Mickey Boone (4- I), Bruce McDougal (3-3) and Marty Smith (2-5). Mitch Mayes and A.C. Bakken kept their Husky humming south of the border to take the overall win in the SCORE Baja Internacional off-road race. Second in the Open class and second overall went to a pair of privateers on a Husky, Steve Sterner and Danny Robinson. Honda riders Al Baker and Steve Holladay won the 250cc class to prevent a Husky sweep, but Husky came close when NilsArne Nilsson and Mickey Quade won the 125cc class on Swedish iron. Former National Champ Rick Woods returned to southern California speedway action, but as far as winning, it . was a lot easier if your name was Bast. Mike won at Bakersfield and Irwindale; Steve topped Costa Mesa. Eddie Lawson and Steve Fortune both scored double wins in a short track/ haH mile event at southern California's Corona Raceway. Lawson topped Gordon Kidd in both 125cc Amateur/Expert classes. Fortune's wins came in the 250cc Amateur/Expert ranks, when he topped Troy Fisker in the short track and Jerry Statum in the haH mile.• Steve Eklund (Yam), Scott Pearson (Kaw) and Bob Scally (Bul) finished 1-2-3 in the 360cc Expert class of a short track at Fremont Raceway in northern California. In the 250cc Expert bash, it was Ricky Delacy, Mike Faria and Duane Yarrow.
