Broc Glov.r one• •g.in fini.h.d runn.r-up to Hond.'. D.vid B.iley. Glov.r h•• only won on. moto .11 Y.l!lr long. the front brake lever was ripped off." The start of the final moto saw Johnson and his CWf Leu-tuned machine with a quick getaway as Bameu, Holland and Liles mixed it up behind him. Lechien locked handlebars with another rider and got the worst of it exiting the first corner; he was dragged to the ground and got back up at the tail end of the pack. Hal£way into the first lap Liles made a charge for Holland toward the bouom of a slope and wasn't able to make the corner that followed. "I really scared mysel£," said Liles. "I got off into a hole at the top and both feet came off the pegs, my hands came off the bars, and I laid it down at the bouom of the hill. Somehow, I had enough momentum and bounced back upright after tagging the fence." King, Howerton and Honda's Bob Hannah, who had a ninth in moto one, went by before Liles recovered. As Johnson sped away, Holland, Barneu and Hannah linked up after Hannah did away with King and Howerton. Hannah pushed into second on lap five, with Holland going ahead through lap nine. Lap 10 saw Johnson with a 10second cushion and Hannah under constant fire from Liles, while HoIland was left in fifth by a charging Howerton. ''I"slowed down in the middle and started looking for some beuer lines," said Howerton. "I was actually going faster and easily passed some riders in the late laps by simply taking advantage of the good lines." Liles careened into second behind Johnson after Hannah stalled with two laps left, then Howerton found a way around Hannah in the final lap. Johnson led Liles, Howerton, Hannah, Holland, King, Bameu, Lechien and Bowen home. "It was my day," said Johnson after a champagne shower in winner's circle. "Good starts, good finishes, and everything in between was good. I'll take this any day!" 500cc David Bailey and Broc Glover wished each other the best of luck as they lined up on the gate, then Glover. got the best start of the 40 rider fiell!, ''1 bogged the motor a bi t on the start," said Bailey. "Broc was already gone and I went to the outside in the grass and passed him. As wewent into the corner he came up beside me and yelled, 'Your bike is way too fast!' Jo Jo (Keller) was right in there with us, and he overshot the corner along with Broe" Less than a minute later Glover again had the upper hand - over Bettencourt's Honda-sponsored Keller - with Bailey a tight third over teammate Danny "Magoo" Chandler and Goat Breker. "I got around Bailey," said Keller, "and I think I could've held that pace all the way. But after I passed him I was only second for about two laps - I lost my concentration for a second and went down, which was easy to do since the track was so slick." Midway through lap three Bailey took up second behind Glover, then Keller got knocked to fourth courtesy Breker. Chandler also crashed and was back in 12th. Glover and Bailey circulated the track less than a second apart through lap six, then Bailey made a clean pass on a downhill early in lap seven and cruised on for the win despite a rockdamaged engine case. "I began to lose transmission oil in the final laps," said Bailey. "Luckily, I was able to finish." Glover placed second over Breker and Team Tamm's John Whelchel, who had slipped ahead of Keller at the hal£way point. Keller took fifth over Yamaha Support rider Pete Snoneland. After repairs were made to Bailey's motor by tuner Cliff Whi~e, Bailey was again forced to follow Glover at the start of moto two. Breker, Whelchel and Keller trailed, with Husqvarna's Micky Dymond sixth over Montgomery Cycle's Mickey Kessler. Glover snuck away from Bailey to the tune of one to two seconds per lap through lap three, but then Bailey seuled down and began to close in. By lap five two seconds was all that remained between Glover and Bailey, with Breker waiting in third another two seconds back. Whelchel held fourth Keller, Kessler and Dymond. It was not until lap 10 that Bailey got the break he was waiting for. "We were on the same downhill where I had passed Broc in 'the first moto," said Bailey, "and I made a 'miracle' pass. Broc was going slow at the top then he gassed it really hard. I was already committed and was going way too fast. I jammed on the brakes and went for the inside of the corner, trying not to run into him. Basically, I crashed but kept going somehow, and I had the lead. My bars had even dragged on the ground!" Bailey kept up his momentum for the win over Glover, with Breker a close third. Kessler moved in to finish fourth after Whelchel dropped out, and Dymond took fifth over Snoneland and Keller. "I thought I had a clogged air filter with all of the 'moon dust' out there," said Keller, "but now we think it was just a fouled spark plug. I was holding on in fifth but since the bike was running poorly I got passed toward the end. I'm still preuy happy with sixth overall." Breker stayed as close as anyone Y.m.h.'.
