CHRIS WHITE Blevins. Hughes win in Visalia By Bill Locey VISALIA, CA, JULY 17 After a 114-degree scorcher the day before, things cooled off into the nifty 90s for race night as Randy Blevins supplied his THESE CHAMPIONS RACE & WIN WITH THE NEW ALPINE STARS PRO BOOTS FROM HI-POINT, "THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS" UNSURPASSED FEATURES QUALITY AND PROTECTION !!! own heat as he took the Scratch main. And a new local rider, Rich Hughes of Visalia, took Handicap honors. Blevins got the gate and led all the way even though rider Ron Hardin kept it close, but found no opportunities to pass, and had to ettIe for the wrap-up spol. In a two-man race a considerable distance behind, Don Butler beat Walt Farnum for third. Hughes made it look easy 0[[ the zero-yard-line in the Handicap main. Past winner Stu McDaniel kept it close, but couldn't get by. At the back of the race, Ed Castro and Belvins tangled with Castro going down, good for last place. • Super-Protection: In. . . of "'0 ..ckling••cein. . . . . . .1ahl" guard. plank Ie ptotltCtion. pI•• tic: shift are•• pt••ric toe lltCtion. pI.IItk: rch. • Stet. of the an tole; .... dreg, ••eeI inMrt, toot ptIg gripper. Ventura win By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, JULY 10 On a wild, crash-filled night tbat was par for the course under a full moon, Jim Lawson won his first-ever Ventura main event when he dusted 0[[ that two-wheeled all-star, Mike Faria. Andy Northrup won the Handicap main. For Faria who leads his closest rival by more than 100 points at the Commotion by the Ocean, it was an off night as he managed "only" a second and a third in the mains. Faria even went down all alone in his Handicap heat for his crash of the year; and John Sandona beat "Flyin' Mike" in a Scratch semi. So after 14 weeks of speedway, that's twice Faria has lost to someone besides Kelly Moran in Scratch racing. Some slump, huh? In the Scra tch mai n, no one got the killer gate, but Lawson got to lurn two first - but only for a second. 1981 Track Champ Steve Lucero took the lead next, then Sandona was ahead, but his chain broke and he was history. Having enough excitement for one lap,'Lawson took over coming out of four, and Faria could get no closer than twO lengths the rest of the way. In Handicap racing, Northrup moved quickly off the 40-yard-line into second after just one lap of the !llain. A lap later, he picked off northern rider John Volk, and won easily. That's two handicaps for Northrup so far as he moved past the recuperating Brad Oxley into fifth in track points. • Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Jim Lawson; 2. Mike Forio; 3. Stove Lucero: 4.
