A grimy but proud Brent Smith
after winning the 125cc Pro class
during a massive thunder storm.
the first lap to nail second by the
second lap, after fifth-place start.
Carson's lead increased with every
turn, but he wasn't the fastest one on
the track - Doug' Jackson and his
Honda were. Luckily for Carson,
Jackson led the 250cc Intemediate
class, which started on the second
wave, after the 500s.
With twO laps gone, Jackson
worked up through the 500s to challenge Jackson. With one lap to go,
Jackson dove underneath Carson in a
tight left turn and took the lead. But
at the top of the following hill, Carson tried Jackson's trick in retaliation but failed. Jackson took the
checkered first. Second Open Intermediate went to Pipes, followed by
Troy Brown on a Kawasaki, and
Barry Hill on a Maico. Second 250
went to Honda-mounted Jim Huber,
ahead of Yamaha pilots Rod Hamby
and Steve Savala.
Kawasaki rider Jimmy Brown took
control of the 80cc Expert class; winning from start to finish. Another ,
Kawasaki rider, Gregg Godfrey, survived a front wheel wash-out down
thestartlfinish table-top jump to finish second. Yamaha pilot Nick Tatton was also a top contender and
made a quick goggle change in the
middle of the race to finish third.
Matt Jenkins settled for fourth.
By the time the final moto came
around, it was three o'clock, and the
weather was horrible. The rain just
kept falling, making the course next
to impossible to ride around, so the
125cc Junior class had their hands
full. Rick Koischowsky from Apple
Valley, California, on a Kawasaki,
put in a fine ride to beat his competitors and the mu·d. He topped the
moto handily ahead of Cord Pearson
on a Kawasaki, Jim Bacon on a
Husky and Viejo Jones, on a Yamaha.
