CRC rewards Dunestown riders By Lee Taylor Honda rider Scottie Scherb was the 250cc Senior short track victor at Hillside Raceway over John Gladwill. Lhe pace on lap two. Stine casually worked through the pack to take second for second overall. Bayless' fourth-place finish behind Tracy Smith netted hjm Lhird overall. Dennis Daft kept Cooper honest in Lhe 125cc Modified Pros. Daft powered his YZ to Lhe holeshot in the first moto wiLh Cooper a close second. Daft opened up a three-second lead within two laps. Cooper charged to within striking distance but overcooked a turn and ended his chances of a win. The Honda pilot cruised to second ahead of Felix and Stine. In the second moto Daft pulled another holeshot, but Cooper was out for revenge and quickly took the lead. The two battled until the quads again claimed Cooper. By the time Cooper regained his composure, Daft was out of reach. Cooper settled for second and second overall, while Stine's 4-3 rides earned him third overall. Danny Mathes e- e- 40 The California Racing Club family gathered at Shakey's to award a handsome array of trophies to winning racers in Manneh claims top money at Barona Oaks the Budweiser-sponsored Dunestown Race Series and the Dunestown Grand Prix. Unsung heros tend to come and go in motocross as well as any sport. This Wednesday night proved Lhe exception. PJI 's Steve Schaeffer was there as he always has been, giving away chajn lube and a pat on the back to anyone who needed him. This night he brought over $1500 in lubricants, shirts, hats, etc., to sweeten the lot of the winners. When Schaeffer's name was mentioned by announcer Greg Barbacovi, a cheer went forth that rocked the room. With help from Banzai Brothers, O'Neal and Ka1-Gard, the CRCadded even more loot to the winner's pot of gold. One Mini rider's absence was sadly felt. Ten-year-old John Shaver, one of Southland's most respected 60cc racers, met his death the previous Saturday at Saddleback Park. John wasn't on the track, just making his way to Lhe pits when he was hit headon by a careless rider and his 250cc machine. Shaver never had a chance. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and a broken neck. Fortunately he never regained consciousness. The motorcycle didn't kj)) John; its rider, too busy having fun to look out for other riders, was Lhe cause. There have been so many close calls at tracks everywhere. This wasn't one of them. This time a IO-year-old boy's life was taken away from him_ If anything posjtive can come from this may it please be caution and consideration for each other. Godspeed, John. By Rod Eschenburg AN DIEGO, CA, JU E 17 Kawasaki Team Green rider "Bullet Bader" Manneh and Honda Support rider Terry Fow ler were the stars of the fealUred 125cc Open money class at Barona Oaks last Sunday. Both of the extra-lap motos started off with Fowler jumping off to the lead. and Manneh right behind. In the first round, it was torrid action all the way, with Fowler holding off all of Manneh's challenges; until the eighth lap when Fowler hit a hole that slammed him down so hard that his helmet visor was knocked off, allowing Manneh to cruise home the victor. The second moto started off likewise, but this time, "Bullet man" showed his old Barona style as he quickly swept by Fowler on the fourth lap, after two "set-up" laps. Behind the two top runners, another terrific battle was being staged for third. fourth and fifLh, with David Hopwood (Kaw) finishing at 4-3, Cory Falter (HondalSuzuki of Poway) at5-4, and John Conney(Kaw) filling out Lhe top five with a 3-7. Topping the Minicycle action was the 12-16 year old ovices, wiLh top rookie of 1984 rider Mike Berkley taking a tie-breaker over AI McFall in the Modjfieds. McFall then bounced back to take Lhe Stocks. McFall's Stock win was a career first for the second-year rider who did it with a 1-4 effort over Rick Flores' 5-1 second overall with 18 other riders battling all the way in both motos. Berkley, who seems to have one good and one bad class each raceday, had his good one in the Modifieds, although it was not his usual dominating ride. He had to make a late pass on McFall for the tie- breaker overall. Results Scherb sharp at Hillside ST By M.
